Google Meet launched in Apple CarPlay before Android Auto, but Google has not explained why it chose that order. CarPlay’s rollout began on March 23, 2026, and Google announced it on April 2. Android Auto support was announced on June 18, with its Scheduled Release rollout expected to finish by June 26. Both versions are simplified, audio-focused ways to join meetings and calls from a supported car display—not ways to watch meeting video while driving.
Why did Google Meet arrive on CarPlay first?
The order is clear; the reason is not. In its April 2, 2026 announcement, Google said Android Auto users could expect a version of Meet “soon,” but did not explain why CarPlay came first. Google’s June 18 Android Auto announcement confirmed the follow-up without giving a reason for the sequence. There is no official basis for attributing the delay to engineering work, Apple, Android policy, or marketing.
When did Meet become available on each car platform?

Google listed Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts as eligible on both platforms. The feature was on by default for users who had Meet installed on the relevant iPhone or Android phone. The rollout dates describe when Google made the feature available; visibility could depend on the rollout stage and an updated app.
What can you do with Meet in the car?
Both integrations put a simplified interface on the car display. You can access scheduled meetings and recent call history, join with video off, mute or unmute, and leave. Meeting video is not shown, and the experience does not offer the full set of Meet interactions. When the phone is connected to the car, meeting audio plays through the car speakers; after disconnection, it returns to the previous phone or earbud output.

- CarPlay: Connect by Bluetooth or USB, open Meet on the CarPlay display, and choose a scheduled meeting or a recent person or group. A meeting joined through CarPlay skips the pre-call screen. If a host uses a waiting room, the display shows that you are waiting; you cannot admit or reject participants from the car controls.
- Android Auto: Connect by Bluetooth or USB, select a scheduled meeting and tap Join, or place a call from History. Calls and meetings skip the pre-call screen. Android Auto can show incoming caller information and provides answer and decline controls.
What is different about Android Auto accounts?
Android Auto does not support work-profile accounts for upcoming meetings or call history. Active calls can still appear on the display. This is a specific limitation of those lists, not a statement that every Meet call from a work account is unavailable.
What can’t you do from either car display?
Neither integration is a video-conferencing screen: video stays off and meeting video content is hidden. Google directs users to park safely before using the mobile app for video, chat, polls, or other interactions that are unavailable from the car interface. The reduced feature set should not be treated as a guarantee against distraction.

What do you need to use it?
You need a supported car with CarPlay or Android Auto, a phone connected by Bluetooth or USB, and the Meet app installed and updated. Google’s setup guidance does not identify an additional purchase as a requirement.
