Fortinet completed its acquisition of Lacework effective August 1, 2024. Lacework’s cloud-native application protection platform became the basis for Lacework FortiCNAPP, which Fortinet continues to document and update. The practical change for customers is a transition to FortiCloud and Fortinet licensing: check your account and renewal terms rather than assuming the service either ended or stayed unchanged.
Did Fortinet acquire Lacework?
Fortinet announced a definitive agreement to acquire Lacework, then completed the transaction effective August 1, 2024. The announcement said the deal was expected to close in the second half of 2024, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions; the completion announcement confirmed that it had closed. Fortinet’s announcement reported nearly 1,000 Lacework customers at the time. That was a company-reported figure from 2024, not a current or independently verified customer count. Fortinet’s completion announcement quoted CEO Ken Xie saying the acquisition aligned with the company’s aim to provide security across on-premises and cloud environments.
How much did Fortinet pay?
The original announcement did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms. Fortinet’s 2025 Form 10-K later reported that it acquired Lacework for $152.3 million in cash. The filing also recorded a $106.3 million bargain-purchase gain, primarily because of recognized deferred tax assets. That accounting gain is not the purchase price or an announcement-day valuation. Fortinet’s 2025 Form 10-K provides the subsequent figures.
What was Fortinet’s plan for Lacework’s technology?
Fortinet said it intended to offer Lacework’s cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) as a standalone product and integrate it with its existing portfolio. The stated goal was to help customers identify, prioritize, and remediate risks and threats across cloud-native infrastructure, from code to cloud. These were Fortinet’s strategic intentions, not independent findings about product performance or customer outcomes.

Fortinet later announced the general availability of Lacework FortiCNAPP, based on Lacework’s platform and integrated with the Fortinet Security Fabric. Fortinet described features including automated remediation and blocking active runtime threats. Those capability descriptions are vendor claims, not independent test results. In the availability announcement, Fortinet CMO John Maddison described the product as based on Lacework’s platform with tight Security Fabric integration.
Is Lacework FortiCNAPP still active?
Fortinet’s documentation indicates ongoing product activity: the FortiCNAPP policy changelog includes entries from 2026. Its migration FAQ also describes moving FortiCNAPP accounts to FortiCloud. The FAQ calls a “Lacework legacy entitlement” a SKU that Fortinet no longer offers and says customers must use Fortinet SKUs at renewal. The policy changelog and Fortinet’s transition FAQ are the relevant references for current product and account-transition details.
Those documents do not establish that every Lacework capability or customer’s access has ceased. Nor do they establish that every customer has the same migration date, entitlement, or renewal terms.

Treat the impact as an account, product, and contract question. Review your FortiCNAPP tenant, migration status, current entitlements, and upcoming renewal with Fortinet or your account representative. In particular, confirm whether your account has moved to FortiCloud and which Fortinet SKU applies at renewal; do not assume a legacy Lacework SKU remains available.

If you are deciding whether to keep FortiCNAPP or evaluate alternatives, compare your own requirements rather than relying on acquisition announcements. Useful criteria include cloud coverage, code-to-cloud capabilities, integrations, alert quality, remediation workflow, deployment model, migration requirements, license entitlements, and renewal terms. Fortinet’s deal and product announcements do not, by themselves, establish that the acquisition improved customer support, product quality, or security outcomes.
