Automate HTML-to-PDF generation with a browser automation tool such as Puppeteer or Playwright, or use a dedicated paged-media renderer such as Prince. Puppeteer and Playwright render PDFs using print CSS by default; the right choice depends on your page layout, paper and pagination requirements, deployment environment, and accessibility needs. There is no universal winner for speed, reliability, or cost—test representative documents in the environment where you will run the automation.
Choose a PDF generation approach
For a page that already renders in a browser, browser automation is a practical starting point: load the page, wait for the content and assets your document needs, then export it as a PDF. Puppeteer and Playwright both document this approach. If your output is a document with carefully controlled pagination, running headers, footers, or page numbers, also evaluate a paged-media renderer such as Prince.
- Puppeteer: a browser automation API with
Page.pdf(). Its documented default is print CSS media. - Playwright: a browser automation API whose
page.pdf()options include paper formats, margins, page ranges, headers and footers, and a tagged-PDF option. - Prince: a CSS-based HTML/XML-to-PDF renderer with documented paged-media features, including page numbering and page headers and footers.
These tools have different controls and output behavior. Official documentation does not establish which is fastest, most reliable, or least costly for a particular workload. Compare them with your own HTML, fonts, assets, required output, and deployment conditions.
Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project using the package manager and browser setup appropriate to your environment. The example below navigates to a page and writes a PDF to output.pdf:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. That means print-specific rules can change or hide elements relative to the screen view. If the PDF should use screen styling instead, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf():
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
Puppeteer documents that PDF generation waits for fonts to load by default. This is helpful, but it is not a guarantee that every image, external resource, or application-specific asynchronous update is ready. Add an explicit wait for a page-specific signal when your application needs one, such as a selector that appears after the document content is rendered.
Print output may modify colors. Puppeteer points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are wanted; verify the result in the PDF rather than assuming browser-screen colors will carry over unchanged.
Generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() also renders using print CSS media. A basic Node.js example is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.pdf({
path: 'output.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: { top: '20mm', right: '15mm', bottom: '20mm', left: '15mm' }
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The example is a starting point, not a universal production configuration. Consult the Playwright Page API for the current option names and behavior; the API documents paper formats and units, margins, page ranges, header and footer templates, background printing, CSS page-size preference, and tagged output.

When CSS defines the page dimensions in @page, Playwright’s preferCSSPageSize option lets the CSS page size take priority over a format or width/height value supplied through the API. Test the combination you intend to use so that CSS and API settings do not produce unexpected paper dimensions.
Playwright documents a tagged-PDF option, which defaults to false on the cited API page. Enabling it is not, by itself, proof that a PDF meets a particular accessibility standard. Inspect and validate the output against the conformance requirement that applies to your project.
Use a paged-media renderer for document-oriented layouts
Prince converts HTML and XML documents to PDF using CSS. Its user guide describes paged-media features such as generated page numbering and page headers and footers. Consider it when those document-layout controls are central to the output, then check its behavior against your real templates and requirements.

Control paper size, pagination, and page furniture
Print versus screen styles
Decide whether the document should follow print-specific styles or reproduce the screen presentation. Puppeteer and Playwright use print media by default. If a page relies on screen-only styling, explicitly select screen media where supported or create a print stylesheet intended for PDF output. Check visibility, layout, colors, and page breaks in the resulting file.

Page dimensions and margins
Set the paper format or dimensions and margins intentionally. Playwright documents format, units, margins, and a preference for CSS page sizing. Review any @page rules in your stylesheet alongside API options. Do not assume that a CSS page size and an API-specified format will automatically resolve the way your design expects.
Headers, footers, and page numbers
For browser automation, check whether the chosen API supports the header or footer template you need and how that template is rendered. Playwright documents header/footer templates. Prince documents paged-media approaches for page numbering and running page furniture. Confirm typography, alignment, and page numbering across short and long documents.

Enable background printing if the design depends on background colors or images, then inspect the PDF. Print rendering can handle colors differently from screen rendering. Ensure that fonts and assets are available before capture; Puppeteer waits for fonts by default, but application-specific resources may need their own readiness checks.
Page ranges and accessibility
Playwright documents page-range selection and tagged output. Use page ranges when you need only part of a rendered document, and validate the selected pages and numbering. Treat tagged output as an option to investigate, not a substitute for accessibility review against the standard your organization must meet.
Build a reliable HTML-to-PDF workflow
- Prepare the HTML: make the content deterministic and give the page a clear completion signal if data or assets load asynchronously.
- Choose the renderer: start with Puppeteer or Playwright for browser-rendered pages; evaluate Prince when paged-media controls are an important requirement.
- Set media and page rules: decide between print and screen styles, define paper dimensions and margins, and check
@pagerules. - Wait for content: navigate to the page and wait for the readiness condition your application needs. A network-idle condition alone may not represent completion for every site.
- Export and inspect: generate PDFs from representative short and long documents, then check page breaks, clipped content, fonts, backgrounds, headers, footers, and colors.
- Validate operational needs: measure runtime, failure behavior, resource use, and cost in the intended deployment environment. The cited documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark across these options.
Troubleshoot common PDF problems
The PDF looks different from the browser page
Cause: PDF generation uses print media by default, so print CSS can change the layout. Fix: review @media print rules and either design for print or explicitly emulate screen media before exporting.

Images or dynamic content are missing
Cause: navigation finishing does not necessarily mean application rendering or every external asset has finished. Fix: wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific ready state, and check that required resources load successfully before generating the PDF.
Fonts are wrong or text wraps unexpectedly
Cause: the intended font may not be available to the renderer when layout occurs, or the PDF may be using a fallback. Puppeteer waits for fonts by default, but this does not cover every application or asset failure. Fix: verify font requests and readiness in the rendered page, then compare line wrapping in the PDF.
Backgrounds or colors are absent or altered
Cause: background printing may be disabled, or print rendering may adjust colors. Fix: enable background printing where the API supports it and inspect the exported file. For Puppeteer color fidelity, review its documented -webkit-print-color-adjust guidance.
Paper size or page breaks are unexpected
Cause: API dimensions, margins, and CSS @page rules may interact. Fix: choose which setting governs page size, check units and margins, and test with content that crosses page boundaries.
Headers, footers, or page numbers do not appear as expected
Cause: template or paged-media behavior varies by renderer and configuration. Fix: verify support in the selected tool’s documentation and test the output across multiple pages, not just the first page.

Performance, reliability, and cost
Do not choose a renderer based on an unsupported universal claim about speed, reliability, or price. The available official documentation describes features and APIs, not a neutral, like-for-like benchmark. Test representative HTML—including your largest documents, slowest assets, and most complex page layouts—under the same deployment conditions you expect to use.
Record completion time and failure modes for your own workload, and include the operational environment in the decision: browser startup and management, rendering dependencies, document volume, and the consequences of a failed or incomplete PDF. The appropriate comparison depends on those conditions, so no general cost or performance figure is asserted here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate a PDF from a local HTML file?
Yes. A browser automation workflow can navigate to a local file URL, subject to the browser runtime’s file-access and resource-loading configuration. Test local fonts and linked assets in the environment where the job runs.
Does enabling tagged PDF guarantee accessibility compliance?
No. A tagged-PDF option is not proof of conformance to a specific accessibility standard; validate the generated document against the requirement that applies to your project.
