CES 2025 showed AI PCs as one part of a wider shift toward running AI on devices and in local systems. Intel, AMD and Qualcomm announced processor platforms for AI-capable PCs, while Qualcomm and NVIDIA also tied the show’s AI story to settings beyond laptops. Those January 2025 announcements describe vendor plans and specifications—not independent proof of performance or usefulness.
What CES 2025 said about AI PCs and edge AI
An AI PC is a personal computer built with hardware and software intended to run some AI tasks locally. The CES announcements linked PCs with neural processing units (NPUs) and AI features, but edge AI has a wider scope: it can mean processing on or near a device in a vehicle, smart home, business or on-premises system, not just on a laptop.
The distinction matters. A laptop is one possible edge-AI device; an on-premises inference appliance or automotive system is a different deployment with different tasks and constraints. Qualcomm explicitly described edge AI across PCs, automotive, smart homes and enterprise, and announced both an on-premises inference appliance solution and an AI Inference Suite for on-premises and cloud deployments. Qualcomm’s January 6, 2025 CES announcement framed the shift as a move toward AI processing at the edge.
What Intel, AMD and Qualcomm announced for PCs
Intel: Core Ultra platforms across several markets
Intel’s January 6 announcement covered Core Ultra 200V mobile processors positioned for vPro and Copilot+ PCs, along with additional Core Ultra lines for enthusiasts and edge computing. Intel reported up to 99 TOPS across the CPU, GPU and NPU on the cited platform. This is a vendor-stated combined platform figure, not an NPU-only figure or the result of an independent comparison. Intel’s CES 2025 newsroom announcement provides the company’s scope and positioning.

AMD: Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 200
AMD announced expanded consumer and commercial processor families, including Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 200, as well as PRO variants. AMD described Ryzen AI Max as offering up to 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, up to 40 RDNA 3.5 graphics compute units and an NPU rated up to 50 TOPS. It also stated up to 50 NPU TOPS for the new Ryzen AI 300 models. These are announced specifications, not independently measured results. AMD named system and collaboration plans involving Dell, ASUS, HP, Lenovo and MSI. AMD’s January 6, 2025 announcement describes the lineup.
Qualcomm: Snapdragon X extends its PC platform
Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon X as the fourth platform in the Snapdragon X Series, aiming to bring its Windows PC platform to a broader range of Copilot+ PC designs. The company described an 8-core Oryon CPU and a 45 TOPS NPU, and said devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo were expected in early 2025 in the $600 range. That was an announcement-era target and schedule, not confirmation of current retail pricing or availability. Qualcomm also reported more than 50 NPU-powered AI experiences in its software ecosystem; that is the company’s count, not an independent assessment of how useful or capable each experience is. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X announcement gives the company’s figures and expectations.

How to interpret the TOPS figures
TOPS means trillions of operations per second. It is a measure of stated compute capability, but figures with different scopes are not a fair head-to-head speed ranking. Intel’s cited maximum combines CPU, GPU and NPU figures for a platform; Qualcomm’s 45 TOPS figure is for the Snapdragon X NPU; AMD’s up-to-50-TOPS figures refer to NPUs in specified Ryzen AI models.
| Announcement | Vendor-stated figure | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Core Ultra 200V platform | Up to 99 TOPS | Combined CPU, GPU and NPU platform capability, as reported by Intel |
| Qualcomm Snapdragon X | 45 TOPS | NPU capability, as reported by Qualcomm |
| AMD Ryzen AI Max and specified Ryzen AI 300 models | Up to 50 TOPS | NPU capability, as reported by AMD for the cited models |
Because the values cover different components and platforms, they do not establish which computer will run a particular application faster. Real-world suitability also depends on the workload, software support, device design and configuration. The CES announcements did not provide a neutral cross-vendor benchmark.

Why the show’s AI story went beyond laptops
Qualcomm’s announcements connected edge AI with consumer PCs, automotive systems, smart homes and enterprise use. Its proposed on-premises inference appliance and AI Inference Suite illustrate two deployment choices: keeping inference on local infrastructure or combining on-premises and cloud services. The announcements establish intended product directions, not that every deployment is available or fits every organization’s requirements.
NVIDIA’s CES 2025 press-kit index also grouped RTX 50 Series and AI foundation-model announcements for RTX AI PCs with Cosmos world models, Omniverse physical-AI work, robotics, automotive and Project DIGITS. The index supports the broader point that CES framed AI as spanning personal computers and physical systems; it is not enough to compare performance or characterize each product in detail. NVIDIA’s CES 2025 press-kit index lists those announcement areas.

What the announcements mean if you are choosing an AI PC
The CES launches make clear that several processor vendors were expanding AI-PC lineups across different product tiers. They do not, by themselves, identify a best laptop. The material available here does not verify present-day availability, current prices, or independent comparisons between specific retail configurations.
- Start with your workload and form factor. Decide which applications and tasks matter, and whether you need a laptop or another kind of edge system.
- Check application and feature support. A processor’s AI capability only helps when the software you use supports the relevant platform features.
- Compare the whole device. For specific laptops, assess price, memory, battery life and availability alongside the processor family.
- For an edge deployment, define where processing happens. Distinguish a personal computer from an on-premises appliance, vehicle or smart-home device, then evaluate the task, operating environment and local-versus-cloud needs.
These checks are more useful than selecting a device by TOPS alone: the headline number is not a substitute for evidence about the exact system and workload you care about.
