Yes—but the update in question, Windows 11 preview update KB5041587, was released on August 27, 2024, so it may no longer appear as a separate download. Microsoft listed it for Windows 11 version 23H2 (all editions) and Enterprise and Education editions of version 22H2. Early third-party game tests reported gains around 10% on two tested Ryzen CPUs, but those results are not a performance guarantee for every AMD processor or PC.
What update delivered the reported AMD performance boost?
KB5041587 was a Windows 11 preview cumulative update released on August 27, 2024. Microsoft listed Windows 11 version 23H2 across all editions, plus Windows 11 Enterprise and Education version 22H2, as applicable. Microsoft’s update record describes the update and its delivery channels; it does not make the specific AMD gaming-performance claim. Microsoft’s KB5041587 support entry is the primary source for its scope and release details.
At the time, Microsoft offered the update through Windows Update’s optional updates area and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Its changes were also slated for inclusion in a later security update through Windows Update for Business. That is historical rollout guidance: a current PC may already have received the relevant changes through later servicing, and KB5041587 may not be listed as a standalone optional update.
How much faster were the tested Ryzen CPUs?
MobileSyrup reported early results from Hardware Unboxed and KitGuru. The cited figures are averages from selected gaming tests, not guaranteed gains across all games or workloads.

| Tested processor | Reported result | Conditions described in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 7700X | About 10% average improvement | Hardware Unboxed; several games at 1080p, as summarized by MobileSyrup in 2024. |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | 11% improvement | Hardware Unboxed; the same tests as the 7700X, as summarized by MobileSyrup in 2024. |
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | Similar improvement reported; no percentage stated | KitGuru results as summarized by MobileSyrup. |
| Ryzen 9 7950X | Improvement reported; no percentage stated | KitGuru results as summarized by MobileSyrup. |
MobileSyrup’s August 28, 2024 report relayed these third-party results. The available summary does not provide full benchmark methodology, including the complete game list or software-state details, and the tests were not independently reproduced here. Treat the percentages as outcomes for those tested CPUs and conditions—not as expected gains for every Ryzen system, game, or application.
How to check for the update now
During the original rollout, users on Windows 11 23H2 could check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, as MobileSyrup reported on August 28, 2024. Microsoft also made the preview available through the Update Catalog. Because the release is historical and its changes could be included in later updates, do not assume KB5041587 will still appear by name.

No special cooler, thermal paste, motherboard, or tuning utility is required to receive a Windows update. AMD describes Precision Boost 2 as automatic: boost behavior depends on factors such as temperature, workload, active-core count, socket power, motherboard current, configuration, operating-system optimization, and the processor’s maximum boost frequency.

- Can deliver fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
For general CPU performance, AMD advises attention to cooler mounting, thermal paste, case airflow, BIOS, Windows configuration, and AMD chipset drivers. These are general system-performance considerations, not prerequisites for KB5041587. AMD’s Precision Boost 2 guidance explains the conditions that affect automatic boost behavior.
AMD Ryzen Master is a separate monitoring and tuning utility, not the Windows update. AMD notes that overclocking and Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) can affect warranty coverage; neither is needed just to install Windows updates.
