For a TypeScript identifier you want to rename safely, start with an editor that uses the TypeScript language service—such as Visual Studio Code—and use its semantic Rename Symbol command. For recurring naming or code-quality patterns, add TypeScript-aware lint rules. These tools solve different problems: rename updates references to a symbol, while linting reports patterns selected by your project’s rules. Review proposed edits before applying them.

Which tool should you use?

Need Best-fit tool What it does What to check
Rename an identifier and update its references An editor integrated with the TypeScript language service, such as Visual Studio Code Performs a symbol-aware rename rather than replacing matching text indiscriminately. VS Code documents the Rename Symbol command and TypeScript refactoring support. Microsoft’s refactoring documentation and TypeScript refactoring documentation. Whether the correct project is loaded, which files are included, and whether the preview includes changes you intend to make.
Inspect where a symbol is used Editor reference search and navigation Helps inspect occurrences and navigate to uses. The cited VS Code documentation covers rename and refactoring workflows; it does not establish a comparative ranking of all reference-search tools. Repository scope, generated or declaration files, and whether matches in comments or strings are relevant to your review.
Flag repeated naming or code-quality patterns A TypeScript-aware linter such as typescript-eslint Reports patterns covered by the rules your project enables. typescript-eslint says its plugin includes over 100 TypeScript-specific rules for best practices, bugs, and stylistic issues. See its rules directory. Rule relevance, false-positive burden, typed versus syntax-only checks, and integration with your editor and CI.
Rename or move a file while updating imports An editor file operation with TypeScript support Updates import paths that refer to the moved or renamed file. This is a file operation, not a semantic rename of an identifier. VS Code describes its TypeScript import-path updates. Relative imports, path aliases, package boundaries, and project configuration.

These are complementary categories, not a proven ranking of editors. The available documentation does not establish version-by-version comparisons for other editors or TypeScript integrations.

Rename a TypeScript symbol without relying on text replacement

Use the editor’s semantic rename when changing a variable, function, class, property, or other symbol. In VS Code, place the cursor on the symbol and invoke Rename Symbol (F2 is the documented shortcut). The TypeScript language service helps identify references tied to that symbol; a plain project-wide text replacement can also change unrelated text with the same spelling.

  1. Open the repository as a TypeScript workspace. Confirm the editor has recognized the intended project and its TypeScript configuration.
  2. Inspect the symbol’s uses. Search references or navigate to uses before making a broad or public-facing change.
  3. Invoke Rename Symbol. Place the cursor on the identifier, use F2 in VS Code, and enter the new name.
  4. Review the proposed edits. VS Code documents a Refactor Preview panel for inspecting changes, accepting or discarding them, and selectively applying parts. Pay particular attention to exported symbols, package boundaries, generated files, and public APIs.
  5. Apply the intended changes and run the repository’s normal checks. Review the resulting diff and run the project’s usual tests, build, and lint commands as appropriate.

Symbol rename and file rename are separate operations. VS Code documents that when a TypeScript project file imported elsewhere is moved or renamed, it can automatically update the import paths that reference it. That behavior concerns imports to the file; it does not replace the need to use Rename Symbol for an identifier inside the code.

Use lint rules to find recurring problems

A linter is useful when you want a rule to flag a class of patterns consistently across files or in CI. It does not automatically know which same-spelled identifiers you intend to rename. Choose and enable rules that match the project’s naming conventions or code-quality needs, then review their findings before making changes. The number of available rules is not a measure of how many are appropriate for your codebase.

Typed linting relies on TypeScript project information. Ensure that the files being linted belong to the intended project; otherwise, configuration errors or incomplete type-aware analysis can result. The typescript-eslint typed-linting guide explains project-service setup and troubleshooting. If editor lint results appear stale, its guidance notes that restarting the server may be a workaround.

TypeScript also supports language-service plugins, which can integrate additional diagnostics and fixes into editor experiences. Its TSConfig plugins documentation gives typescript-eslint’s language-service plugin as an example of ESLint messages and fixes appearing in compiler output. Plugin behavior depends on the configured tooling; it does not eliminate the need to choose and configure the rules.

How to choose and validate a workflow

  • One identifier needs a new name: use semantic Rename Symbol, inspect its proposed edits, then run the project’s checks.
  • A naming or code-quality issue keeps recurring: select a TypeScript-aware lint rule that addresses that pattern and enable it in the project configuration.
  • A file is moving or changing names: use the editor’s TypeScript-aware file operation to update imports, then inspect the diff.
  • Linting behaves differently in the editor and CI: check that both use compatible project configuration and that the linted files belong to the intended TypeScript project.

Specific performance rankings, accuracy rates, or a best editor across all TypeScript environments are not established by the cited documentation. Treat editor support and project setup as practical selection criteria, then validate changes in your own repository.
