For most single-PC streamers, buying a separate hardware encoder is not the first step to take. If your computer has a modern GPU encoder and OBS already meets your quality and performance needs, you may already have the useful part of hardware encoding. A standalone encoder is more compelling when you need a portable, computer-independent production setup with multiple camera inputs, live switching, or recording.
The phrase “hardware encoder” can mean either a GPU encoding block inside a PC or a separate streaming appliance. Those solve different problems, so decide which one you mean before spending money.
What a hardware encoder does—and what it does not mean
GPU encoding in a computer
OBS can encode video with its x264 software encoder, which uses the CPU, or with a supported hardware encoder that moves encoding work to specialized GPU hardware. OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide good video quality with minimal performance impact. That can be useful if CPU encoding is affecting your stream or other applications.
This does not necessarily require buying anything: check whether your existing GPU supports an encoder compatible with your streaming software and destination.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A standalone streaming encoder
A standalone appliance is a separate device that encodes a video signal and may also combine production functions such as camera inputs, switching, recording, and network connectivity. It is a workflow decision, not simply a way to move encoding work off a PC’s CPU.
When GPU encoding is enough
If you stream from one computer, first try the encoder already available in your GPU. It is a reasonable fit when OBS runs reliably, the GPU encoder supports a destination-compatible format, and the resulting picture meets your needs at the bitrate you can use.
- Start with the problem you need to solve. If the CPU is under strain during software encoding, test a supported GPU encoder before buying a second device.
- Check quality at your actual settings. “Hardware” does not automatically mean better picture quality. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding using its default veryfast preset. Results depend on encoder generation, codec, settings, content, and bitrate.
- Account for the whole workload. Encoding is only one part of a stream. If performance remains poor after changing encoders, investigate other sources of load rather than assuming an external appliance will fix them.
OBS’s guidance is about encoder capabilities and trade-offs; it is not a universal, current head-to-head quality ranking for every GPU and software version. Compare the exact encoder and settings you plan to use.

When a standalone encoder can be worth it
Consider an appliance when its production features solve a real need that your existing setup does not. It may be worthwhile for an event, portable production, or a multi-camera setup where connecting inputs, switching shots, recording, and streaming through one device simplifies the workflow.

Check compatibility before choosing an encoder
The encoder must produce a signal your streaming destination accepts. Check the platform’s current requirements for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and ingest protocol, then confirm the hardware supports them.
YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists recommended settings by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and recommends CBR and RTMPS. Use its current guidance for the settings you intend to stream: YouTube Live encoder settings.
OBS and NVIDIA guidance
NVIDIA’s OBS guide gives destination-specific recommendations: it recommends NVENC H.264 for Twitch and describes YouTube codec options according to supported hardware. Its advanced settings recommend CBR, a platform-appropriate bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. These recommendations can change with platform and software updates, so check the current documentation for your destination rather than treating one preset as universal: NVIDIA’s OBS broadcasting guide.

A practical decision checklist
- What do you already own? If your PC’s supported GPU encoder meets your needs in OBS, an appliance may duplicate capability rather than solve a problem.
- How complex is production? Multiple camera inputs, live switching, recording, or portable operation are concrete reasons to consider a standalone device.
- What does the destination accept? Verify codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, and protocol against current platform requirements.
- Does the picture hold up at your available bitrate? Test the exact encoder generation and settings. Hardware encoding is not automatically superior in image quality.
- Does the appliance replace something? Compare its input, switching, recording, network, and portability features with the equipment and work already in your setup. Do not assume a financial payback without a verified cost comparison.
Common problems and what to check
The stream looks worse after switching to hardware encoding
Encoder generations and settings vary. Compare the same content at the same bitrate, confirm the codec and quality options, and consult the documentation for your exact GPU and streaming software. A hardware encoder is not guaranteed to match every software-encoding configuration.
The encoder option is missing or the stream will not start
Confirm that your software recognizes the encoder, that your hardware supports the selected codec, and that the destination accepts the chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol. For YouTube, use its current encoder settings guidance rather than relying on an old preset.

CPU load is still high
Verify that OBS is actually using the selected GPU encoder rather than x264. If it is, other applications or production tasks may still be using CPU resources; hardware encoding moves encoding work, not every part of the streaming workload.
A standalone unit does not fit the planned setup
Before purchase, confirm the exact model’s inputs, output modes, network options, recording capabilities, and support for the destination you use. Product features differ; specifications for one device should not be assumed for another.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than produce a camera-based live show, StreamNeo takes a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops your uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.
- Nothing has to stay running at home.
- Videos stream as uploaded, in any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
