Fixing low FPS or stutter in an Unreal Engine game starts with identifying what is slowing it down. CPU or GPU load, memory pressure, storage access, shader compilation, and—in online play—network conditions can produce similar symptoms. Try reversible checks first, compare the same gameplay scene, and avoid buying hardware until you have evidence of a specific bottleneck.

Identify the kind of performance problem

Low frame rate, intermittent hitching, long loading pauses, and online-only choppiness are different symptoms. Note when the issue occurs and whether it affects one game or several. A hitch that repeats when a new area or effect appears points to a different investigation than consistently low FPS throughout a session; neither pattern proves a cause by itself.

  • Consistently low FPS: The system may be unable to keep up with CPU or GPU work, or it may be constrained by memory or another resource.
  • Brief hitches or frame-time spikes: Possible causes include shader compilation, resource loading, driver behavior, or background activity.
  • Loading pauses: Storage access can be one factor, though the game’s own loading behavior also matters.
  • Choppiness only online: Network bandwidth or connection conditions may be relevant, even if local rendering looks smooth.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 performance profiling guide describes profiling as examining resource use such as CPU or GPU processing, memory, and network bandwidth. It also identifies RAM, VRAM, hard-drive access, and network bandwidth as possible constraints. A game’s use of Unreal Engine alone does not reveal which resource is limiting your PC.

Measure before changing settings

Compare performance in the same scene, with the same gameplay activity and settings. If lowering resolution or GPU-heavy quality options noticeably improves performance, that is evidence to investigate a GPU limit—not a definitive diagnosis. If it makes little difference, do not assume that progressively lower graphics settings will fix a CPU, memory, storage, or network problem.

Use the game’s performance overlay if it offers one. Unreal Engine’s stat commands can display runtime statistics, and Unreal Insights records frame-by-frame performance data for deeper investigation. These tools are most useful when the game exposes them or when a developer is analyzing a report; retail games may not provide every profiling feature. Profiling itself uses system resources and can slightly worsen performance while attached.

Epic distinguishes CPU-bound work—where CPU work on one or more threads is limiting progress—from GPU-bound work, where rendering or post-processing asks more of the graphics processor than it can handle. Memory and storage can complicate either picture: filling RAM may lead to out-of-memory errors or additional cleanup work, VRAM pressure can arise from texture memory, and frequent storage access can delay operations.

Try safe, reversible checks in order

  1. Check the game’s requirements and updates. Compare your PC with the system requirements published for that specific title and install available game updates. Note whether the issue began after a game or graphics-driver update.
  2. Reduce background load. Close applications using substantial system resources, especially if the PC is near the game’s minimum requirements. This is a diagnostic check; restore anything you need once you have compared results.
  3. Check laptop power and graphics selection. Confirm the laptop is plugged in and using an appropriate power mode. Check that the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than an integrated GPU where the system provides that choice.
  4. Test one graphics change at a time. Lower resolution or a GPU-heavy quality setting, then replay the same section. If the result does not meaningfully change, restore the setting and investigate another possible limit rather than sacrificing image quality without benefit.
  5. Check graphics drivers through the GPU maker. Look for a current driver from the graphics-card manufacturer. If the problem started immediately after a particular driver update, consult the game and GPU vendors’ support guidance before considering a rollback; a newer driver is not guaranteed to suit every game.
  6. Verify the game’s files if the platform supports it. Use the launcher or platform’s supported file-verification feature. For example, Epic’s instructions for Fortnite include checking requirements, verifying game files, checking graphics drivers, and reviewing power mode. Those are Fortnite support steps, not universal Unreal Engine instructions; for another title, follow its publisher’s support page.
  7. Record repeatable hitches for the developer. Include the game version, PC hardware, graphics settings, and the location or effect that triggers the hitch. A precise reproduction is more useful than simply reporting that an Unreal Engine game stutters.

EA Help gives similar general PC graphics troubleshooting advice—Windows updates, settings appropriate to the PC’s requirements, dedicated-GPU selection on laptops, driver checks, and limiting unnecessary background applications near minimum requirements. It also notes that driver problems, including a new driver that does not work well with a particular game, can contribute to microstuttering. This is general PC advice, not proof of the cause in a specific Unreal Engine game. See EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guide.

Understand shader-compilation stutter

Some short hitches happen when a game needs a shader that has not yet been compiled for use. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation says, “the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” Its CPU and memory performance guidance describes pipeline state object (PSO) caching: collecting graphics pipeline states through testing or automatic precaching so they can be available in later builds and reduce runtime compilation.

In practice, the durable fix depends on how the game developer implements caching and precaching. Epic’s February 4, 2025 engineering article, “Game engines and shader stuttering: Unreal Engine’s solution to the problem,” explains that a render engine may need to compile a shader immediately before using it, leaving the game waiting for the driver. The article discusses developer practices, including PSO precaching; it does not establish a universal player-side switch that fixes shader stutter in every title.

Match the remedy to the likely bottleneck

What you observe What to investigate Who can act
FPS changes substantially when resolution or GPU-heavy quality is reduced GPU rendering or post-processing load; compare the same scene and change one setting at a time. Player can test settings; hardware changes should wait for measurements.
Low FPS persists despite a substantial graphics reduction CPU work or another constraint may be involved; settings alone may not address it. Player can check background load and system behavior; deeper timing analysis may require developer tools or support.
Hitches coincide with newly seen effects or locations Shader compilation, resource loading, or driver behavior may be involved. Player can document and report a repeatable case; game developers control shader caching and precaching implementation.
Long pauses coincide with frequent storage access Storage may be one limiting factor, but confirm the game’s requirements and evidence before replacing a drive. Player can check the existing setup; hardware replacement is conditional, not a general FPS fix.
Visual choppiness is limited to online play Network conditions or bandwidth may matter alongside local rendering. Player and game or network support can investigate; a graphics upgrade is not an established remedy.

This is a way to organize checks, not a diagnosis from symptoms alone. No general FPS gain can be promised: results depend on the game, PC configuration, scene, and limiting resource.

When not to buy hardware or use risky tweaks

Epic’s documentation identifies frequent hard-drive access as one possible bottleneck, but it does not say that moving a game to an NVMe SSD will raise FPS on an undiagnosed PC. Consider storage replacement only when evidence points to storage-limited loading or the game’s requirements make an upgrade necessary—not as a default cure for low FPS or stutter.

Avoid treating undocumented configuration edits, registry changes, shader-cache deletion, disabling security tools, or raising process priority as universal fixes. They can create new problems, and the cited guidance does not establish them as safe, broadly effective remedies. If the issue continues after the checks above, use the game’s official support channel and provide a concise symptom description, reproduction steps, version, and hardware details.
