But laptops still make more sense when you need a full computer in changing locations. The right choice depends on where you work, which apps you need, how much you type, and the cost of the complete setup.
Should you replace your laptop with a mini PC and tablet?
Consider the two-device setup if your laptop spends most of its time connected to a monitor at home or in an office, and you want a lighter device for travel and casual work. A mini PC handles desktop applications at a fixed workspace; a tablet covers mobile tasks that suit its operating system and form factor.
Keep a laptop if you regularly move between unpredictable work locations and need to do substantial typing or multitasking in each one. A laptop combines a screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, and battery in a single computer. Microsoft’s Windows form-factor guide similarly distinguishes desktops for people who mostly work in one place from laptops for people who want a computer that moves easily.
What each setup requires
Mini PC plus tablet
A mini PC is a desktop computer, not a portable computer with a small screen. You need a display, external keyboard, pointing device, and power outlet to use it. HP describes mini PCs as a fit for compact or semi-permanent workspaces and notes that the setup is awkward for airport or café work without an external display (HP’s mini PC overview).

The tablet supplies the screen and battery when you are away from that desk, but it is not automatically a laptop replacement. App availability, typing comfort, and multitasking capability vary by tablet model and operating system. Microsoft lists reading, note-taking, sketching, meetings, and travel among tablet-friendly uses in its form-factor guide.
Laptop
A laptop is ready to work wherever you take it, without requiring a separate monitor or keyboard. That convenience is part of its value, even if it stays docked much of the time. Microsoft notes that laptops may also be more comfortable for long typing sessions and heavy multitasking, and can offer more ports than tablet PCs.

Compare the setups against your work
| Factor | Mini PC plus tablet is a better fit when… | A laptop is a better fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Work locations | You mostly work at one desk, or between prepared desks with monitors and power. | You work in changing places or while commuting. |
| Mobile work | Your mobile tasks are mainly reading, notes, markup, meetings, or other light work. | You need the full computer, with its own screen and keyboard, wherever you go. |
| Typing and multitasking | Long typing sessions and demanding multitasking happen at the desk. | You need to type for long periods or multitask heavily away from the desk. |
| Software | Your tablet’s apps handle mobile tasks, while desktop-specific work stays on the mini PC. | You need the same applications and working environment everywhere. |
| Cost and equipment | You already own useful monitors, input devices, or chargers and can use them with the new devices. | The two-device setup and required accessories would cost more than one suitable laptop, or add equipment you do not want to manage. |
| Connections | The exact devices support the monitors and peripherals you plan to connect. | You prefer a built-in display and fewer connection dependencies. |
Count the full setup cost, not just the computer
Compare the price of a laptop with the complete mini PC and tablet setup. Include any monitor, keyboard, pointing device, tablet keyboard, stylus, chargers, dock, or hub you need to buy. A tablet may need a keyboard for extended typing or a stylus for handwriting and annotation; accessory compatibility depends on the model. Microsoft’s form-factor guidance recommends weighing accessory costs, while HP’s mini PC overview makes clear that the PC itself does not include the display and input devices required to use it.
If you already have a monitor and desk peripherals, the mini PC may slot into an existing workspace with fewer new purchases. If you are starting from scratch, account for all the equipment before deciding. No broadly applicable comparison establishes that this combination always costs less or delivers better performance than a laptop; the outcome depends on the specific devices and accessories you choose.

Check software and connections before buying
Confirm the tablet can handle your mobile tasks
List the apps you rely on away from your desk and check that the exact tablet supports them with the features you need. Consider whether mobile work involves short messages and document review or substantial writing, complex spreadsheets, or several apps at once. PCWorld’s tablet buying guidance treats tablets as useful for many everyday tasks and as a possible lightweight second device, while making the choice dependent on application needs.
Verify each connection, not just the connector shape
Before choosing a dock or hub, check the specifications for the exact computer, tablet, dock, and monitor. USB-C describes a connector, not a guarantee that a port supports every display, data, or charging feature. Microsoft Learn’s USB-C dock guidance explains that supported data, power, and DisplayPort capabilities determine what a connection can do.

Write down the peripherals and displays you intend to use, then confirm the relevant ports support them. A dock can connect displays and other peripherals, but it cannot add capabilities that the computer or tablet’s port does not support.

- Map your work locations. If most demanding work happens at a desk with power and a monitor, a mini PC is practical. If you often work in places without a prepared setup, a laptop’s built-in screen and input devices matter more.
- Separate desk tasks from mobile tasks. Put desktop-only or demanding applications on the mini PC. Check that the tablet’s apps cover what you actually need away from the desk.
- Be realistic about typing. If you write for hours while travelling or regularly work with many windows open, test whether a tablet and its accessories will suit that routine; otherwise, prefer a laptop for mobile work.
- Inventory what you own. Note existing monitors, keyboards, pointing devices, chargers, and compatible peripherals before estimating the cost of either configuration.
- Check exact model specifications. Verify the tablet’s app and accessory support, and the mini PC and tablet ports’ display, data, and power capabilities before buying a keyboard, stylus, dock, or hub.
- Price the complete configurations. Compare everything required to make each option usable, not just the headline price of the mini PC or laptop.
When the mini PC and tablet arrangement makes sense
Choose the split setup when you want a comfortable, monitor-based workspace for your main work and a separate light device for suitable mobile tasks. It can be especially sensible if you already own desktop peripherals and do not need to carry your full computer from place to place.

When a laptop remains the better choice
Choose a laptop when portability means being able to do the same substantial work anywhere—not merely carry a device for reading or notes. Its integrated screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, and battery reduce setup dependencies and the need to coordinate two devices. PCWorld’s mini PC comparison likewise frames the mini PC as worth considering when a laptop stays at a desk connected to external peripherals, while noting the loss of built-in components and portability.
