This shortlist compares ten options by role, so you can choose for the software you test, your team’s skills, and where you need tests to run.
It is a practical field guide, not a claim that these are objectively the ten best products. The broader field reflects vendor-authored comparisons, and the available official documentation is strongest for Playwright, Selenium, and Katalon. Check each provider’s current documentation and pricing before choosing.
How to choose an automated testing tool
Start with the application under test, then separate the tool that helps you author tests from the infrastructure that executes them. Some teams use both a framework and a hosted execution service.
- Application coverage: Identify whether you need browser-based web, mobile, API, desktop, or combined testing. The term “test automation” alone does not establish platform coverage.
- Languages and team skills: Prefer a workflow your engineers can maintain, including languages already used in the codebase.
- Browser and device coverage: Check exact browser engines, branded browser builds, operating systems, and device targets—not just a general cross-browser claim.
- Authoring workflow: Decide whether code-first tests, a visual IDE, or a mix of manual and scripted authoring suits the team.
- Execution and CI: Assess local and hosted execution, CI integration, parallel runs, reporting, and how much infrastructure your team must operate.
- Maintenance and cost: Consider setup effort, test upkeep, and subscription or licensing charges. Pricing and plan limits change, and current prices were not established for this shortlist.

1. Playwright — code-first browser testing
Playwright combines browser automation with a test runner. Its official site documents auto-waiting, assertions, traces, and parallel execution, with projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Its browser guide also covers branded Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels and emulated tablet and mobile devices.
Playwright’s bundled Chromium and its patched Firefox and WebKit builds are not identical to every branded browser binary. If Safari fidelity or media codec coverage matters, verify the relevant browser channel and test environment rather than treating “WebKit” as a complete substitute for Safari. Keep Playwright and its browser binaries updated together for current compatibility.

2. Selenium — WebDriver-based browser automation
Selenium is an umbrella project built around browser interaction tools. Its components include WebDriver, language bindings, browser-specific drivers, Selenium Manager for driver and browser management, Grid for distributed execution, and Selenium IDE for recording and playback. Setup typically means installing language bindings and the target browser; Selenium Manager can automate parts of browser and driver management.

Selenium is not obsolete: the project documents current WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi work. Its WebDriver documentation identifies WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. Selenium’s modularity offers flexibility, but teams compose more of the stack themselves than with an integrated test runner.

3. Cypress — web-test framework candidate
Cypress appears in current vendor comparisons as a web-focused developer option. Treat it as a framework candidate when evaluating browser-based application testing; confirm current browser support, language requirements, execution model, and plan limits in Cypress’s official documentation before deciding.
4. Appium — mobile automation candidate
Appium is identified in current comparisons as a mobile-oriented framework candidate. If mobile apps are central to your work, verify the exact platforms, device setup, supported drivers, and CI workflow you need in Appium’s official documentation. The available evidence does not establish a detailed feature comparison here.

5. WebdriverIO — framework candidate
WebdriverIO is among the common frameworks named in current vendor comparisons. Consider it as a test-authoring and automation option, then verify current language support, browser and mobile coverage, integrations, and maintenance requirements directly with the project.
6. Robot Framework — keyword-driven approach
Robot Framework is listed as an additional automation approach in current comparisons. It may merit evaluation when a keyword-driven style fits the team, but validate the libraries, application coverage, and authoring workflow required for your project in its official documentation.
7. Katalon Studio — integrated testing IDE
Katalon’s official documentation describes Katalon Studio as an automated testing IDE built on Selenium, with interchangeable manual and script editors. That makes it a distinct option for teams considering a mixed visual/manual and scripted workflow, rather than a like-for-like comparison with a code-first framework. The available evidence does not establish comparative performance, total cost, or superiority over frameworks.

8. TestComplete — commercial authoring-platform candidate
TestComplete appears in broad vendor-authored roundups as a candidate. Before shortlisting it, confirm its current supported application types, authoring model, integrations, licensing, and operating requirements in the provider’s official materials; detailed claims on those points are not established here.
9. BrowserStack — hosted browser/device execution candidate
BrowserStack is an execution-service candidate, not a direct substitute for a test framework. A hosted service can provide environments beyond a team’s local setup, while tests still need an authoring framework or compatible test workflow. Verify the current browser/device inventory, supported integrations, parallel capacity, and plan pricing directly with the provider.
10. Sauce Labs — hosted execution platform
Sauce Labs describes its role as an execution layer in a current comparison of testing options. It can be evaluated alongside a framework such as Playwright or Selenium when hosted browser or device runs are needed. Confirm available environments, integration details, concurrency, and subscription limits in current official materials.

Frameworks and hosted execution are different choices
A framework helps define, author, and run tests; a hosted browser or device service supplies execution environments. They can be combined, so a team need not choose one category exclusively.
| Category | Shortlist entries | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Browser automation frameworks or approaches | Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, WebdriverIO, Robot Framework | Which application targets, languages, authoring model, and CI workflow fit your team? |
| Mobile-oriented framework candidate | Appium | Do its verified platform and device options match the apps you test? |
| Integrated IDE/platform candidates | Katalon Studio, TestComplete | Does the authoring workflow justify the platform’s setup and licensing trade-offs? |
| Hosted execution services | BrowserStack, Sauce Labs | Which hosted environments and integration limits meet your coverage and scale needs? |
Playwright or Selenium for browser testing?
Both are broad browser-automation choices, but their architectures differ. Playwright provides a test runner and documented browser projects. Selenium centers on WebDriver and lets teams assemble language bindings, drivers, and distributed execution through Grid. Compare them against your existing language skills, desired setup, browser requirements, and CI operations rather than treating one as universally superior.
What usage surveys can and cannot tell you
The TestRail Software Testing & Quality Report, Fourth Edition (2025) search extract says 39% of respondents reported using Selenium. That is a respondent survey result, not market share or proof that Selenium is best; the sample size and field dates are not established here, so the figure should not be generalized beyond the report’s stated respondents.
Quick Recap
A practical selection sequence
- List targets: Write down the web, mobile, API, desktop, or other platforms and the specific browsers or devices that must be covered.
- Choose the authoring layer: Compare code-first frameworks with IDE or lower-code workflows against the skills your team can sustain.
- Choose where tests run: Begin with local execution if it covers your needs; evaluate hosted services when browser/device breadth or execution scale requires it.
- Validate a representative workflow: Check that your selected tool can run the critical tests through your CI and produce reports or diagnostics your team can use.
- Check ongoing constraints: Verify current versions, supported targets, plan limits, and licensing in official product documentation before committing.
