Start with the company’s own definition of its data-center segment, then measure that segment against total revenue across multiple periods. Next, check whether sales produce operating income and whether the company can deliver products as customers build usable data-center capacity. A segment label is an accounting category—not a standardized measure of AI-chip sales.
1. Find out what the company counts as data-center revenue
Read the segment note in the issuer’s latest 10-K and 10-Q before relying on a headline growth rate. Record the products included, and whether the company reports accelerators separately from CPUs, networking, or other products.
AMD says its Data Center segment primarily includes AI accelerators, server CPUs, GPUs, APUs, DPUs, AI network interface cards, FPGAs, and adaptive SoCs. Its segment revenue therefore is not a clean measure of AI-accelerator sales alone. See AMD’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.
NVIDIA’s cited filing describes data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions, but the reviewed disclosures do not establish a common classification that makes the two companies’ segment totals directly equivalent. Compare each issuer’s own accounting category, not just the words “Data Center.” NVIDIA’s definition and risk disclosures are in its Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Measure revenue exposure and its trend
For each reporting period, record data-center segment revenue and total company revenue, then divide the former by the latter. Repeat the calculation over several quarters or years. A single period can show current mix; a sequence helps distinguish a sustained shift from a one-quarter change.
AMD reported $6.718 billion of Data Center revenue and $11.536 billion of total revenue for Q2 2026, the quarter ended June 27, 2026. Dividing the segment figure by total revenue gives approximately 58.2%; that percentage is a calculation from AMD’s reported figures, not a company-published statistic. The comparable Q2 2025 Data Center figure was $3.240 billion. These are quarter-specific reported results, not a forecast. The amounts appear in AMD’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.
Use matching fiscal periods and label them clearly. Companies can have different fiscal calendars, so do not compare one issuer’s fiscal quarter with another’s calendar quarter as if the periods were identical. Keep annual, quarterly, and trailing-twelve-month figures separate unless you explicitly identify the basis.

3. Check whether the revenue is profitable
Growing segment revenue is only one part of exposure. Where the company reports segment operating income or loss, compare it with segment revenue and examine its direction over time. Also review company-level gross-margin trends and management’s explanation of mix, while keeping the measures distinct: consolidated gross margin is not segment operating margin.
AMD reported Q2 2026 Data Center operating income of $2.103 billion. Separately, AMD’s August 4, 2026 earnings presentation said comparable non-GAAP gross margin increased by more than 200 basis points year over year, with higher Data Center revenue mix among the drivers. The presentation noted that Q2 2025 included $800 million of inventory and related charges tied to U.S. government export controls on AMD Instinct MI308 products, which affects the comparison. Treat the segment operating-income figure and the adjusted, company-level gross-margin explanation as different disclosures. See AMD’s Q2 2026 financial results slides and Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.
4. Test whether supply and customer buildouts can support sales
Chip demand does not automatically become shipped product, recognized revenue, or installed capacity. Review filings for manufacturing and packaging limits, product transitions, customer concentration, and delays in building facilities or securing power and capital.

In its Q2 FY2027 filing, NVIDIA said Blackwell accounted for most system shipments, Rubin production shipments began in Q3 FY2027, and it was experiencing supply constraints. The filing also describes how shortages of infrastructure or capital can delay customer deployments. These disclosures matter because sales growth depends on both the supplier’s ability to deliver and customers’ ability to build usable data centers.
“The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners.”

5. Follow commitments, cash flows, and customer financing
Look beyond product shipments to the financial obligations and arrangements that can shape future results. Relevant items include inventory, receivables, purchase and supply commitments, customer payment terms, guarantees, infrastructure leases, and partner financing. Determine whether a disclosed arrangement is binding and what its terms say; do not treat every commitment or expectation as an ordinary chip sale.
NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 filing discusses AI-cloud agreements, long-term infrastructure leases and guarantees, partner commitments, and increased manufacturing commitments. Such arrangements can affect cash timing, risk, and future revenue. Read the disclosed terms alongside the company’s cash-flow and balance-sheet information rather than assuming a commitment guarantees a sale. See the NVIDIA Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Keep geographic figures in context
Customer headquarters, shipment destination, and the location of end users are not interchangeable. NVIDIA’s FY2026 Form 10-K estimated that 76% of Data Center revenue from Taiwan-headquartered customers was attributable to end customers in the United States and Europe. This is NVIDIA’s estimate for that fiscal year and that customer-headquarters group, not a general allocation rule for all revenue or all semiconductor companies. NVIDIA said it changed to customer-headquarters-based geography in Q3 FY2026 and recast prior periods. See its FY2026 Form 10-K.

7. Compare semiconductor companies on explicit axes
A useful comparison makes the differences in scope visible instead of implying that similarly named segments are interchangeable.
- Segment scope: Which product groups are included, and are accelerators reported separately?
- Revenue mix and trend: What share of company revenue comes from the segment, and how has that changed across comparable periods?
- Profitability: What segment operating income or loss is reported? What does the company say is driving consolidated margin changes?
- Concentration and transitions: How dependent is growth on particular customers, products, or successful architecture transitions?
- Delivery constraints: What do filings say about supply, manufacturing capacity, power, construction, and customer readiness?
- Financial commitments: What inventory, purchase commitments, guarantees, leases, or partner arrangements could affect cash and risk?
Use issuer filings for each axis and preserve each company’s fiscal-period, geographic, and accounting qualifications. The available company disclosures provide examples and a method, not an industry-wide benchmark for what percentage of semiconductor revenue should count as data-center exposure.
