Check the garment’s care label, test any cleaning product or solvent on a hidden area, and avoid machine-drying the garment until the stain is gone.
Identify the stain before treating it
Check the craft product label if you still have it. In particular, “water-based” ink is not necessarily washable; the marker should specifically say “washable” to make that claim. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) says dried water-based paint cannot be removed, and permanent marker may not come out, so avoid assuming one remedy works for every stain.
| Stain | First treatment | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Water-based craft glue | Scrape off excess; soften hardened glue with warm, wet paper towels, then pretreat and launder. | Use the hottest water safe for the garment. |
| Water-based paint | Rinse with warm water while wet, then launder. | ACI says dried paint cannot be removed. |
| Oil-based paint | Use the thinner named on the paint-can label, then rinse, pretreat, rinse again, and launder. | Do not choose an arbitrary household solvent. |
| Regular felt-tip marker | Rinse with cold water; blot from the back over paper towels with rubbing alcohol. | ACI’s method is for markers not labeled permanent. |
| Permanent marker | A manufacturer-specific hand-sanitizer pretreatment is one cautious option. | Removal is not guaranteed; check fabric and product labels. |
Remove water-based craft glue
- Scrape off excess. Use a dull edge and avoid spreading the glue.
- Soften hardened glue if needed. Saturate a stack of paper towels with warm water and place it over the glue for about an hour, then scrape away what has softened. This is ACI’s guidance for water-based craft glue.
- Pretreat and launder. Apply a prewash stain remover and wash at the hottest temperature safe for the garment, following its care label.
ACI’s general adhesive advice covers adhesives broadly and is not the same as its craft-glue instructions. For water-based craft glue, use the craft-specific method above rather than assuming every adhesive responds the same way.
Remove water-based paint
If the paint is still wet, rinse the fabric with warm water, then launder according to the care label. ACI warns: “Once paint is dry, it cannot be removed.” For paint that has already dried, you may cautiously try a compatible pretreatment and another wash, but the cited guidance does not establish that this will work.

Remove oil-based paint
- Check the paint-can label. Use the thinner it identifies. ACI advises using turpentine only if the label does not identify a thinner.
- Rinse, pretreat, and rinse again. After using the specified thinner, rinse the area; pretreat with prewash stain remover, bar soap, or laundry detergent; then rinse again.
- Launder safely. Follow the garment care label and use only a water temperature safe for the fabric.
Spot-test the thinner on a hidden area first, and follow its label precautions. Do not substitute a solvent simply because it is available at home.
Remove regular felt-tip marker
ACI’s procedure is for felt-tip markers that are not labeled permanent. Work over a washable surface and use clean paper towels to absorb transferred ink.

ACI recommends checking marker packaging carefully and choosing markers specifically labeled washable for children’s crafts. “Water-based” alone does not establish that an ink will wash out.
Try a cautious approach for permanent marker
ACI notes that permanent marker may not come out. Clorox describes a product-specific alternative: pretreat with alcohol-based hand sanitizer, follow with a fabric-appropriate laundry stain treatment, wash according to the garment care label, and air-dry to inspect. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal method or a guarantee of removal.

- Follow both the clothing care label and the directions on any stain remover or solvent.
- Test products on a hidden area before treating the visible stain.
- Use only the hottest water safe for the garment, not automatically the hottest machine setting.
- If a stain remains, repeat a compatible treatment and air-dry the item before inspecting it again. Do not put it in a hot dryer while the stain is still visible.
The ACI procedures do not establish a universal remedy or success rate for old stains across different fabrics. Results depend on the stain, how it has dried, and what the garment can safely tolerate.
