If Windows 7 says you’ve been signed in with a temporary profile, it could not load your usual user profile and has opened a temporary session instead. First, copy any files you created or changed during this session to an external drive. Windows deletes temporary profiles at logoff, so work saved only in that session can be lost. The message alone does not mean your original profile folder or files have been erased.

Before you sign out, save work from the temporary desktop

Copy any documents or other files you created or changed during the temporary session to an external storage device before logging off. Microsoft warns that temporary profiles are deleted at the end of each session and that changes made to the desktop settings and files are lost when the user logs off. See Microsoft’s Temporary User Profiles and its guidance for users who are temporarily signed in.

This warning is about work saved in the temporary session. It does not, by itself, establish that the files in your usual profile have been deleted. Avoid relying on the temporary desktop as the only place where new or changed files are stored.

Check what kind of profile problem you have

Before trying a repair, note whether the desktop looks reset or unfamiliar, whether your usual profile folder still exists under C:Users<name>, and whether this PC belongs to a work or school domain or uses roaming profiles. Do not delete a profile folder just because Windows has created another one.

Look for Event 1502

On Windows 7, check the Application log in Event Viewer for a User Profile Service Event 1502 near the time of the failed sign-in. Microsoft documents this event for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 when a locally stored profile cannot be loaded. Its examples include insufficient security rights and a corrupt local profile; a detail may say that a file is being used by another process. The event is a clue to investigate, not proof of one particular cause. See Microsoft’s Event ID 1502: User cannot log on.

Consider whether the PC is domain-managed

If this is a domain or roaming-profile computer, involve the administrator before changing profile folders or registry settings. A documented Windows 7 issue applies to a specific combination of Active Directory domain policy and Windows Search, rather than to ordinary home-PC sign-ins generally.

Use caution with profile folders and registry fixes

Do not delete the original user folder, arbitrary entries under ProfileList, or a key with a .bak suffix based on generic online instructions. The Microsoft material cited here does not validate a universal Windows 7 .bak or RefCount repair procedure. A mistaken change can make the profile harder to recover. Preserve important files and arrange a backup before any registry or profile-folder changes.

A narrow stale-folder workaround for a domain-policy issue

Microsoft describes a separate Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 problem that can occur when the policy “Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart” is enabled while Windows Search is running. A race between the User Profiles service and Windows Search can leave stale profile folders incompletely deleted. Duplicate folders with a domain or three-digit suffix and roaming-profile problems can be symptoms. These signs do not establish that this is the cause of a temporary login on a particular PC.

For that documented scenario, Microsoft’s workaround says to remove only stale profile folders that do not contain Ntuser.dat, and specifically warns not to delete All Users or Public. Do not apply this narrow workaround as general cleanup. See Microsoft’s Failed to delete stale user profiles.

Choose a recovery path based on the evidence

If the original profile will not load, recovery broadly means either attempting a profile-specific repair after protecting the data or creating a fresh account/profile and migrating personal files. The right choice depends on whether the existing data is recoverable, whether the PC is domain-managed, and what the event log and profile folders show.

Path When it may fit Risk and limits
Profile-specific repair There is evidence to investigate the existing profile, and important data has been backed up. Changes to registry or profile state can make recovery harder. The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish one universal Windows 7 registry repair.
Fresh profile and file migration The existing profile remains unusable and personal files can be recovered and copied safely. Settings and application state may need to be recreated; managed or roaming profiles should be handled with the administrator.

Microsoft’s current consumer guidance discusses saving work from a temporary sign-in and, if needed, creating a new administrator account and copying personal data. Those pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, however, so their interface directions are not Windows 7 instructions. See Microsoft’s corrupted user profile guidance. For a managed PC or valuable data, consult a technician or administrator familiar with Windows 7 rather than guessing at SID keys.

Plan beyond the immediate repair

Windows 7 security updates and technical support ended on January 14, 2020, according to Microsoft. Once your files and account access are safe, plan to move to a supported operating system or replacement computer. See Microsoft’s Windows 7 end-of-support announcement.
