A crypto wallet drainer usually needs more than a wallet connection: it tricks you into approving a token allowance or signing an authorization that lets a spender move assets. A connection alone generally shares your public address and may expose balances; it does not, by itself, grant permission to transfer tokens. What a scammer can take depends on the approval or signature—and whether your seed phrase or private key was exposed.

How a wallet-drainer scam works

A drainer is a phishing tool built to steal crypto through deceptive wallet requests. Scammers impersonate a project or app, attract users with lures such as fake airdrops, and persuade them to connect a wallet and approve a transaction or sign a message. Chainalysis describes fake airdrops, Discord promotions, and compromised social accounts among observed lures; it also notes that total losses are difficult to track because many incidents go unreported (Chainalysis).

A typical attack may begin with a cloned site reached through a sponsored search result, fake promotion, compromised Discord account, or imitation app. The page then presents a wallet prompt that appears routine. If the user approves a malicious transaction or signs an authorization, the attacker can use the permission granted by that action to move assets. MetaMask describes drainer kits that can batch token, NFT, and Permit2 transfers and route proceeds through exchanges or cross-chain bridges (MetaMask, July 10, 2026).

What a connection, approval, or signature permits

These actions are not interchangeable. A site connection, an on-chain token allowance, and a signed authorization expose different levels of access. MetaMask’s FAQ addresses the distinction directly: connecting a wallet to an app does not itself grant token approval (MetaMask support).

Action What it can permit What it does not mean by itself
Connect wallet The app can learn your public address and may read associated balances. It does not itself authorize token transfers.
Approve a token allowance A specified spender contract can move the relevant token up to the approved amount. An unlimited allowance can put all of that token held in the wallet at risk. It does not automatically grant access to every token or every chain.
Sign a Permit2-style authorization The signature can authorize token movement under its terms, without necessarily creating a new on-chain transaction at the moment you sign. It is not merely a wallet connection or a harmless confirmation just because it is a signature rather than a transaction.
Expose a seed phrase or private key This is a broader compromise: someone with the secret can control the wallet, rather than only using a particular token allowance. It is not the same as granting one token allowance.

Token allowances are on-chain permissions. Leaving a site or disconnecting your wallet does not remove an existing allowance; it may remain usable until revoked. MetaMask explains approvals and the difference between connecting and granting token permissions in its token approval guidance.

What a drainer may be able to take

The scope depends on exactly what you approved or signed. A malicious allowance applies to its specified token and spender, up to the approved amount. If that amount is unlimited, the spender may be able to transfer all of that token currently held in the wallet, subject to the authorization and the relevant network.

A malicious signature can enable transfers within the signature’s terms. Some kits target NFTs or bundle multiple transfer requests, but that does not mean every drainer can take every asset in a wallet. A wallet connection alone does not provide that power, and the mechanisms described here primarily concern Ethereum and EVM-style token approvals; do not assume identical approval systems across all blockchains. MetaMask’s explanation of signatures and drainer activity is available in its scam overview.

If you entered a seed phrase or private key into a website or shared it, treat the wallet as compromised. Ethereum.org warns against sharing these secrets or entering a seed phrase on a website (Ethereum.org security guidance).

What to do after a suspicious wallet request

  1. If the wallet may be compromised, move remaining assets. Create a new wallet whose seed phrase and private key the attacker has never seen, then move remaining assets there. If the old wallet’s secret phrase or private key was exposed, do not keep relying on that wallet. Ethereum.org’s security guidance recommends moving funds to a new wallet when keys are compromised.
  2. Review and revoke harmful approvals. Use an approval checker for the relevant network, inspect the token and spender carefully, and revoke permissions you do not trust. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and costs a network fee. Disconnecting from a dapp is not a substitute for revoking an allowance. Ethereum.org discusses tools such as Revoke.cash and network block explorers in its security guidance; MetaMask also explains token approvals.
  3. Secure related accounts and preserve evidence. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, screenshots, and relevant communications, then report the scam site or address to appropriate services or authorities.
  4. Ignore paid recovery promises. Revoking an approval can stop future transfers under that permission; it cannot return assets already transferred. Ethereum.org states, “No one can reverse blockchain transactions,” and warns that recovery offers can be a follow-up scam (Ethereum.org; scam guidance, updated June 6, 2026).

How to reduce the risk before signing

  • Check the full website address before connecting. Avoid links in unsolicited messages, social posts, and unexpected airdrop claims; search ads and compromised accounts can also lead to imitation sites.
  • Read the wallet prompt, including the token, spender, amount, and requested action. Do not treat a signature as harmless just because it does not look like a conventional transaction.
  • Prefer limited spend amounts over unlimited allowances where the app supports that choice, and periodically review approvals on the networks you use.
  • Never enter a seed phrase or private key into a website or share it with anyone. A legitimate app should not need your secret recovery phrase to connect your wallet.

What different safeguards can—and cannot—do

Safeguard Primary protection Important limitation
Hardware wallet / offline key storage Keeps private keys offline, reducing exposure to online key theft. Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as hardware-wallet options (Ethereum.org). It cannot prevent you from approving a malicious transaction or signing a harmful authorization.
Prompt review and limited spend caps Helps you avoid authorizing an unexpected spender or a larger token allowance than needed. It depends on recognizing what the wallet prompt means; a deceptive request can still be approved.
Approval review and revocation tools Lets you find and remove token permissions that should no longer be active. Revocation requires an on-chain transaction and network fee, and it does not recover assets already moved.

These safeguards address different risks; none is a complete substitute for checking the site and understanding each wallet request. The mechanisms and tools described here are most directly relevant to Ethereum and EVM-style approvals, and tool network support can vary.

How common are these attacks?

MetaMask reported a 207% rise in “signature phishing” exploits, citing its February 2026 Crypto Security Report in an article published July 10, 2026 (MetaMask). That figure is a reported increase in signature-phishing exploits, not a count of all wallet drainers or a measure of total losses; the cited passage does not give the underlying count or methodology.
