To find what’s using disk space in Windows, open Settings > System > Storage. The Storage page shows space by category; select a category to see more detail and available cleanup options. For individual large files, use File Explorer instead.
See which categories are using space
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Review the category totals, including Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved.
- Select a category to inspect its details and any available cleanup choices. If you do not see the category you need, select Show more categories.
Names and options can vary by Windows release. If your screen differs, look for the closest matching label.
Check a different drive
Storage’s main view focuses on the system drive, usually C:. To inspect another drive, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives, then select the drive. The exact wording may vary by Windows build. Microsoft documents this route in its Storage settings guide and Storage Sense guide.
Find individual large files
Storage settings show broad categories, not a complete list of your documents, photos, or videos. To check free space and locate personal files, open File Explorer, select This PC, then inspect folders. In a folder, switch to Details view and sort by size to bring larger files to the top. Microsoft also recommends File Explorer checks in its guide to freeing up drive space.

Choose a cleanup method carefully

| Cleanup recommendations | Reviews potential items such as temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps, and estimates recoverable space. | Review each suggestion and select only what you intend to remove. Cleanup recommendations are choices to review; Storage Sense is configurable automation. Neither requires you to delete every item Windows identifies.
If the totals do not explain the missing space
- Use This PC in File Explorer to confirm the drive’s available space, then inspect folders for large individual files.
- For a drive other than the Windows drive, check Storage used on other drives.
- If you need room for an update or want to move personal files, Microsoft lists external storage as an option in its free-up-space guidance.
Avoid manually deleting system files as a routine response to unexplained usage. Microsoft’s free-up-space guide provides additional troubleshooting paths, including Disk Cleanup guidance for Windows 10.
