To free up space on your C: drive without risking Windows, first check what is using storage in Settings > System > Storage. Then review Windows’ cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup and remove only categories you understand. For more space, delete personal files you no longer need or move files you want to keep to external storage. Don’t manually delete unfamiliar files from Windows or other system folders.
1. Check what is using space on C:
- Open File Explorer > This PC and check the available space on your C: drive.
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows lists storage categories so you can see what is taking up space.
- Select a category or open Cleanup recommendations to review items Windows says you may be able to remove. Labels and navigation can vary slightly by Windows version.
Cleanup recommendations may include temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review the listed items and estimated savings before selecting anything; a category’s presence does not mean every item in it is safe for you to remove.
2. Choose a cleanup method you can review
| Option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanup recommendations | Shows suggested items to review in Windows Settings. | Read each item and check the estimated space savings before choosing it. |
| Storage Sense | Can automatically clean temporary files and Recycle Bin contents over time. | Review its schedule and settings for Downloads and cloud content; those behaviors depend on configuration. |
| Disk Cleanup | Lets you select cleanup categories manually, including system-file categories. | Read each category’s description before confirming removal. |
| Move personal files to external storage | Moves files you want to keep off the PC. | You need the external drive connected to access those files. |
| OneDrive Files On-Demand | Can replace a full local file copy with a smaller placeholder. | Online-only files need an internet connection to retrieve; files set to “Always keep on this device” stay local. |
Review Cleanup recommendations
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if it appears. Select only items you recognize and intend to remove, then use the on-screen cleanup action. Check whether the selection includes a previous Windows installation before proceeding.
Configure Storage Sense deliberately
Storage Sense usually cleans temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin according to its settings. It does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure it to do so. If you enable automatic deletion for Downloads or make locally available cloud files online-only, check the settings carefully so they match how you use those files.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Use Disk Cleanup for category-by-category control
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Choose the C: drive if prompted, then review the listed categories and their descriptions.
- Select only categories you are comfortable removing. To see additional system-file categories, choose the option to clean up system files, then review the refreshed list before confirming.
Disk Cleanup’s system-file list can include Previous Windows installation(s). Treat that as a separate decision, not routine temporary-file cleanup.
3. Decide whether to remove Windows.old
The Previous Windows installation(s) category refers to files used to return to the earlier Windows version after an upgrade. Deleting them removes that rollback option and cannot be undone. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted ten days after an upgrade. If you may need to go back, keep it until you are sure you no longer need that option. Microsoft explains the recovery and storage-cleanup options.

4. Find and remove or move large personal files
If Windows’ cleanup tools do not recover enough space, look through personal folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. In File Explorer, sort a folder by size to find large files, then decide whether you still want each one.
- Delete only files you recognize and no longer need. Deleted files may remain in the Recycle Bin until you empty it, so empty the bin to complete deletion and recover the space.
- Move wanted files to a USB drive, SD card, or other external storage. Keep in mind that you must connect that device to access the files.
Avoid manually deleting unfamiliar files in C:Windows, Program Files, or other system folders. Use Windows’ cleanup tools for system cleanup rather than guessing which files are safe to remove.

5. Use OneDrive Files On-Demand only if online access suits you
Files On-Demand can save local space by keeping a smaller placeholder for a file instead of its full local copy. An online-only file must be downloaded when you need it, so it depends on cloud availability and network connectivity. Files marked Always keep on this device remain stored locally and are exempt from Storage Sense management. See Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance before changing how your files are stored.

Check the free space on C: after each cleanup step and stop when you have recovered enough. If a Temp folder fills rapidly again after cleanup, Microsoft describes a possible Microsoft Store appx-file issue. Its suggested troubleshooting includes resetting the Store, clearing its cache, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance rather than repeatedly deleting files from system folders.
