To control who can see posts in a Facebook group, check the group’s privacy setting: public groups can expose content to people outside the group, while private-group content is restricted to members in Facebook’s examples. If you’re an admin, participant approval and post approval are separate moderation controls; they affect who may contribute, not who can see content.
Who can see my Facebook group posts?
It depends first on whether the group is public or private. Facebook says members of a public group see its content in their Feed and elsewhere on Facebook. It also says anyone on or off Facebook can see pinned items in a public group. In a private group, pinned items are visible only to members, according to Facebook’s Help Center.
| Group setting | Who may see content? | Joining and membership |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Content may be visible beyond the membership; Facebook says pinned items can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook. (Facebook Help Center) | Public groups can have visitors and members; contribution may be subject to participant approval. (Facebook Help Center) |
| Private | Facebook says pinned items are visible only to group members. (Facebook Help Center) | Admission is restricted, but non-members may still be able to see that someone is a member, depending on the group’s privacy level. (Facebook Help Center) |
These distinctions matter before sharing personal or sensitive information. A “private” label does not necessarily make membership itself invisible to non-members. Facebook also describes limited membership, under which someone may see and react to group content before an admin approves them to participate.
How do I make a Facebook group private?
If you’re an admin, inspect the group’s privacy setting in the group’s current settings and follow Facebook’s in-product instructions. The exact current steps and the effects of changing an established group’s privacy—including how earlier posts are handled—are not established here. Read the explanation Facebook presents before confirming a change.

Changing a group’s privacy is different from turning on post review. The privacy setting controls the group’s audience; approval settings govern participation and contributions.
What do participant approval and post approval control?
Facebook describes participant approval as a way for admins to control who may contribute in a public group. Admins may also require approval for later posts. These are moderation tools: they can limit who participates or whether a submission needs review, but they do not change a group’s public or private visibility setting. Likewise, disabling a post format is not a way to hide group content from non-members. Facebook notes that stopping a format does not remove earlier posts that used it. (Facebook Help Center)
Can I choose who sees a post in a Facebook group?
The available information establishes group-level visibility, not a member-facing control to select individual viewers for a post in a public group. If you need to limit who can see a post, do not assume you can make it visible only to selected people while leaving it in a public group. Check the group’s privacy label before posting, and avoid sharing sensitive material in a group whose audience is broader than you intend.

How tagging can widen a post’s audience
Tagging someone is a related, separate visibility factor. Facebook says the audience of a post someone is tagged in can be influenced by both the author’s audience choice and the tagged person’s Profile and tagging settings. Those personal-account settings do not make an otherwise public group private. (Facebook Help Center)
