A Solana transaction that appears pending has not necessarily failed. Check its signature on the same network where it was sent, read both its error and confirmation status, then determine whether its recent blockhash is still valid before deciding whether to retry. If the transaction has expired, create and sign a new transaction; changing the blockhash in an already signed message invalidates its signatures.
Why is my Solana transaction pending?
“Pending” is not a definitive on-chain outcome. A transaction may still be propagating or awaiting a stronger confirmation level, an RPC endpoint may be behind, or the transaction may no longer be retrievable at the commitment level requested. An explicit error is different: it indicates the transaction failed at a processing or execution stage.
Start with the transaction signature and the correct cluster or network. A valid signature checked against the wrong network will not answer what happened to the transaction. Wallets and applications expose status differently, so use the signature and the network’s status rather than assuming a particular wallet has a retry control.
How do I check whether a Solana transaction failed?
- Copy the signature. Get it from the wallet or application that submitted the transaction, and make sure you query the same network.
- Query
getSignatureStatuses. Read the returnederrfield andconfirmationStatus; do not rely on a generic pending label alone. Solana’s official migration guidance points to this method instead of the removedconfirmTransactionapproach. - Interpret the confirmation stage. The commitment order is
processed<confirmed<finalized.processedis weaker thanconfirmed, which is weaker thanfinalized. A transaction has reached only the stage reported; the level required depends on your application or risk tolerance. - If no status appears, check history before concluding. A missing result is not proof of permanent failure. The
getTransactionmethod can returnnullwhen a transaction is not found or is not confirmed at the requested commitment. For signatures that may have left the recent status cache, querygetSignatureStatuseswithsearchTransactionHistory: true.
Solana’s migration guidance notes that a missing status or failed transaction mapped to the legacy false result, which is one reason a simple yes-or-no check can be misleading. Use the actual status, error, and commitment information instead.

How can I tell whether the transaction expired?
Recent-blockhash transactions have a limited validity window. For a transaction you submitted, the sending application should retain lastValidBlockHeight from the getLatestBlockhash response. Compare that saved value with the current block height from getBlockHeight at confirmed commitment. Solana’s confirmation and expiration guidance recommends waiting until the confirmed block height exceeds the saved last-valid height before treating the transaction as expired.
Do not use a universal time limit in seconds: the validity check is based on block height, not a guaranteed wall-clock duration. The transaction pipeline describes a maximum processing age of 150 slots, while user-facing descriptions may express the recent-blockhash window as about 150–151 blocks depending on how the queue limit is counted. The saved lastValidBlockHeight is the practical value to check for your transaction.

Can I resend a pending Solana transaction?
First establish whether it is still within its validity window. If the signature has no explicit error and the last-valid block height has not been exceeded, allow time for status propagation and account for RPC endpoint lag before creating another transaction. Sending a duplicate payment or instruction can produce an unintended second action if the original later lands.
When the transaction is expired, prepare a new message using a fresh blockhash and obtain the required signatures again. Do not edit the blockhash or another signed-message field and reuse the old signatures: changing the message invalidates them. Solana’s partial-signing guidance explains why an expired transaction must be rebuilt and signed anew.

What should I do when the transaction has an error?
Use the returned error and, where available, simulation or preflight logs to identify the failing stage or instruction. Solana’s RPC JSON structures documentation describes simulation result fields and preflight error data; its production-readiness guidance covers common transaction landing and processing issues.
- Blockhash-related error: The transaction may have an expired or unrecognized blockhash. Check its saved validity height and whether the endpoint that received it recognizes the blockhash. If expired, rebuild and sign with a fresh blockhash.
- Insufficient fee-payer funds: The account paying the network fee may not have enough funds. Correct the balance issue before submitting a new transaction.
- Insufficient token balance: The token account may not hold enough for the requested instruction. Correct the token balance or transaction amount before retrying.
- Instruction or simulation error: Inspect the log for the instruction and failure point. Correct the cause rather than repeatedly sending the same transaction.
Why can RPC settings affect a pending status?
RPC nodes can lag, and different nodes may not agree immediately about a newly fetched blockhash or a transaction’s status. If the endpoint used for submission or simulation does not recognize the blockhash obtained elsewhere, a valid transaction can encounter a blockhash-recognition problem. Solana’s transaction confirmation guidance advises aligning preflight commitment with the commitment used to fetch the blockhash. When troubleshooting, check endpoint lag and use consistent commitment settings rather than interpreting one delayed response as a final outcome.

Can a failed Solana transaction still cost a fee?
Yes. Solana’s fee documentation states, “If the transaction fails, the fee is still charged.” The documented base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, and an optional prioritization fee may be added. That base figure is not a guarantee of the total fee for every transaction; it describes the base fee in Solana’s fee documentation, checked in 2026. This concerns the Solana transaction fee, not any separate wallet or service charge.
