For a free-first workflow built around YouTube, start with YouTube Create. What to look for in a Shorts editing app
For original videos, an editor should make it practical to bring together footage you recorded, arrange and trim clips, add readable captions, and balance speech with music or other sound. Aspect-ratio controls matter too: a vertical 9:16 canvas is a familiar Shorts format, while resizing tools can help adapt footage recorded in another shape.
Before editing, decide whether you need a simple one-track assembly or more involved layering, speed changes, background removal, or voiceover. Also distinguish a tool’s available music, templates, and effects from permission to use every asset in every context. Check the license and platform terms for the specific assets you use.

Adobe Premiere mobile: a dedicated Shorts workspace
Adobe describes Premiere mobile as a free, standalone app and promotes a dedicated Shorts space and templates. Its YouTube integration has a notable limit: Adobe’s Help Center says the “Create for YouTube Shorts” workflow formats videos to 9:16 and supports lengths up to 60 seconds. If you plan to make a Short longer than 60 seconds, verify the integration’s current limit before editing. YouTube’s general eligibility rules allow some Shorts up to three minutes, so the two limits should not be treated as interchangeable.

Check that your video fits YouTube’s Shorts rules
YouTube’s current Help page says square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts. This is YouTube’s general platform rule; a particular editor’s template or upload integration may impose a shorter limit. YouTube Help: Shorts
For a vertical project, set the canvas to 9:16 if your editor offers that option, then check the crop before export so the subject and any on-screen text remain visible. If you use a different aspect ratio, review the result in YouTube’s upload flow rather than assuming every app’s preset maps to the same platform behavior.
Make an original Short from your own footage
- Plan the footage. Record the clips you want to combine and decide what the viewer needs to understand from the opening seconds. Stable framing can help when filming, but extra equipment is optional and does not improve an edit by itself.
- Choose an editor for the work. Use Create for a YouTube-centered mobile route, CapCut for listed layering and effects tools, InShot for basic assembly, or Adobe Premiere mobile if its dedicated Shorts workspace fits your intended length.
- Arrange and trim. Put the clips in the sequence that makes the idea clear, remove pauses that do not add meaning, and check that cuts do not make speech or action feel abrupt.
- Add captions and sound deliberately. Check caption language and accuracy. Balance speech against music, and use voiceover or audio cleanup only if it improves comprehension. Verify the terms for any music, template, effect, or imported asset you use; availability in an app library does not establish rights for every use or monetization situation.
- Review the exported video. Confirm the aspect ratio, framing, captions, sound, and duration before uploading. If you are relying on an editor’s direct YouTube integration or Shorts template, check its current duration limit separately from YouTube’s general rule.
Creating a new video is different from remixing an existing one
YouTube also lets creators make Shorts from eligible videos already on their channel. That is a reuse workflow rather than editing newly recorded footage into an original video: YouTube says the resulting Short links back to the original video. Its feature does not allow private or unlisted videos, or videos with third-party copyright claims, to be used this way. YouTube Help: create Shorts from your videos
