Keep only the languages you need active, check microphone access and Voice typing settings, and correct misheard words as you go. These steps can help, but they cannot guarantee accurate recognition of code-switching: Gboard’s voice features do not all list the same language support.
Set up Hindi and English in Gboard
- Make Gboard your active keyboard. Open a text field and use the keyboard selector if another keyboard appears. To open Gboard settings, tap the keyboard’s gear icon; if it is not visible, open the phone’s Settings app and look for its keyboard or Languages and input section. The exact route varies by device and Android version.
- Add both languages. In Gboard settings, open Languages, add Hindi and English, and choose the layouts you prefer. The layout and labels may vary with the Gboard release.
- Use the microphone to dictate. Tap the microphone icon on Gboard. If you are dictating a passage in just one language, select that language with the keyboard’s language key or voice toolbar before speaking. For mixed speech, test with only Hindi and English active. Google advises, “For smoother typing, stick to one or two active languages” (Gboard troubleshooting guidance).
Google describes standard Gboard voice typing as starting from the keyboard microphone, but warns that “Talk-to-text doesn’t work with all languages” (Type with your voice). Having Hindi and English enabled for keyboard input does not establish that every Gboard voice-typing feature will recognize both in the same way.
Know which Gboard voice-typing feature is available
Standard voice typing, Advanced voice typing, and Polished Dictation are distinct feature paths. Their documented language lists differ, so check the Voice typing settings and the language list shown on your own phone rather than assuming a feature is available or supports both languages.

Fix microphone, language, and performance settings
- Check microphone access. In Android Settings, find Gboard under Apps, then review its permissions and allow microphone access if you want to dictate. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Make sure voice typing is enabled. Open Gboard settings and check Voice typing. For Advanced voice typing, also make the primary Gboard language and the device’s primary language match, as Google requires for that feature (Advanced voice typing help).
- If typing is laggy, try the less disruptive fix first. Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guidance suggests turning off personalization as one troubleshooting step and clearing the app cache. Clearing Gboard data is more disruptive because it resets the keyboard; treat it as a later troubleshooting option, not a routine accuracy adjustment (Fix problems with Gboard).
Correct recognition errors and dictate punctuation
When Gboard mishears a word, select it and replace it by typing or speaking the correction. Direct correction is more useful than repeating an entire passage unchanged. For punctuation, standard voice typing may accept spoken commands such as “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” and “new paragraph,” but the command wording and availability can vary by language. If a command is not recognized, insert the punctuation from the keyboard instead (Type with your voice).
Choose personalization with privacy in mind
Google describes Personalize for you as a way to improve recognition for an individual. When enabled, it saves audio recordings and transcripts on the device, which users can delete in Gboard’s privacy settings. This is distinct from the separate, voluntary option to donate audio snippets to Google to improve speech recognition (Gboard privacy information).

Google says donated snippets may contain up to 15 seconds of speech, or up to 25 seconds when they include silence or unrecognized audio, and that it will not keep them beyond 18 months. These details apply to the described donation option; they do not establish that audio is handled identically by every voice-typing feature.

Google’s help pages explain setup, language limitations, and feature-specific requirements, but do not publish a Hindi-English Android dictation accuracy rate or a controlled comparison of microphones. If problems continue, the details needed to diagnose a particular setup are the phone model, Android version, Gboard version, selected voice-typing feature, and locale. An external microphone can provide audio input, but the cited guidance does not establish it as a proven recognition upgrade for Hindi-English dictation.
