Before an Android screen repair, make and verify a fresh backup, check whether your phone supports a repair privacy mode, and confirm the provider’s requirements. A privacy mode can limit access to personal data, but it is not a backup and does not guarantee that repair work will preserve the phone’s data. If the display is unusable, check official guidance for your exact model before assuming you cannot back up or prepare the device.
Before you hand your phone over
- Back up, then check the backup. Make a recent backup and confirm its date and what it includes. Open irreplaceable photos and files from somewhere other than the phone. Backup coverage varies by service, account, settings, and app, so do not assume every app’s data is included.
- Enable the supported repair privacy mode, if available. Use it only if your model is eligible and you can still operate the phone. Pixel Repair Mode and Samsung Maintenance mode limit access to personal information in different ways; neither replaces a backup.
- Keep your screen lock private. Do not give a technician your PIN, password, or pattern. Google explicitly advises Pixel owners not to share these credentials.
- Follow instructions about removable items. Google’s Pixel preparation guidance says to remove the physical SIM before repair. Ask your provider how to handle an eSIM, memory card, case, and accessories for your specific service route.
- Check coverage and get the terms before approving work. Ask whether the exact model and damage are covered, whether there is a diagnostic fee, what parts will be used, how long the repair is expected to take, and what warranty covers the parts and service. Get approval before additional work or charges.
Google recommends backing up before every Pixel repair, even with Repair Mode enabled, because some repairs that affect storage require data deletion. Samsung likewise recommends a backup in case a repair requires a reset or storage replacement.
Repair privacy modes: what they do and do not do
Google Pixel Repair Mode
Google says eligible Pixel phones need Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later and at least 2 GB of free space to use Repair Mode. It starts a clean Android environment on a dedicated secure partition, with limited functions for diagnostics. The feature is not a promise that data will remain untouched: a repair partner may require a reset after assessing the repair, and work affecting storage requires data deletion even when Repair Mode is on. Samsung Galaxy Maintenance mode
Samsung says Maintenance mode is available on Galaxy devices running One UI 5 or later. It creates a separate account for the person handling the phone and conceals personal information such as photos, videos, contacts, and messages. Samsung recommends backing up first because repair may still require a reset or storage replacement. Availability and settings can vary by carrier and software version. If the screen no longer works
Do not assume a broken display makes backup impossible. Check the manufacturer’s official broken-screen backup and input guidance for your exact model. Samsung provides an alternate backup route for some Galaxy phones using an external display and input devices, but it does not apply to every device or damage scenario. If the phone cannot be operated, ask the manufacturer or repair provider what options are available before authorizing a reset or repair that could affect storage.
Google’s Pixel preparation guide says to back up and remove the SIM before sending a phone for service. It also says to factory reset the phone if Repair Mode is unavailable or not used. Follow the current instructions for your specific repair route: service partners may determine that a reset is necessary after they assess the repair. Choose a repair route with the trade-offs in view

If you are considering a DIY screen replacement
Identify the right procedure and parts
Find an illustrated guide for the exact phone model before buying anything. Confirm whether the procedure replaces only the glass, the display, or a complete screen assembly or frame; these are different jobs. Use compatible parts and adhesive for that model, because a generic screen or adhesive may not fit or function correctly.

For example, iFixit’s Galaxy S21 screen guide lists tweezers, a Phillips #00 screwdriver, opening picks, an iOpener, a suction handle, a spudger, high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, plastic cards, a replacement screen, and replacement adhesive. That list applies to the cited procedure, not every Android phone.
Prepare safely and know when to stop
- Power the phone off and follow the battery instructions in the guide for your exact model. iFixit’s Galaxy S23 Ultra screen guide says to bring that phone below 25 percent charge before starting and to unplug cables. This threshold is specific to that guide, not a general rule for every Android device.
- Use protective equipment appropriate to the work. Samsung recommends goggles and cut-resistant ESD-safe gloves and warns that broken glass can cause injury. Its guidance also notes that tools, fasteners, and repairable parts vary by model and region; see Samsung’s disassembly safety guidance.
- Stop if the battery is swollen, the procedure exceeds your experience or tools, or the phone cannot be handled safely. A damaged lithium-ion battery can present a fire risk.
Do not count on the original water-resistance rating
Opening a phone can affect its seals. The cited iFixit Galaxy S21 guide says water resistance depends on adhesive reapplication and that the phone will lose its IP rating after the described repair. That is guidance for the S21 procedure, not a universal claim about every Android phone or repair route. Ask a provider what it warrants for your model after service.
