First determine whether the problem is a bad forecast, incorrect energy readings, or a mismatch between an app and your utility bill. Compare the same quantity over the same time window across the relevant apps. If current readings disagree, check data connections, meter coverage, and sensor setup; if readings agree but a future estimate misses, check forecast settings and allow for changing weather and household use.

Identify what looks wrong

Write down the specific output and period in question before changing settings. Solar generation, whole-home consumption, battery state, and an estimated bill are different quantities and may come from different systems.

  • Which app or account produced the number?
  • Is it a live reading, a historical total, or a forecast?
  • What dates and times does it cover, and what units does it use?
  • Which device supplies the data: inverter, battery, separate monitor, or utility meter?

Compare matched time intervals across the energy-management app, inverter or battery app, and utility data where available. Disagreement in actual readings points toward connectivity, configuration, meter coverage, or sensor setup. If the actual readings agree but a future projection does not, investigate forecast inputs and variable conditions instead.

Check the forecast configuration

Location and solar capacity

Some systems use location and installed PV capacity to estimate solar availability. SMA says Sunny Home Manager combines logged PV generation with internet weather forecasts to predict energy availability over the next 48 hours. Check that the system has the correct longitude, latitude, and nominal PV power; missing location or capacity information can make its forecast absent or incorrect. These settings and requirements are product-specific, and SMA’s interface documentation may not match every current firmware version.

For other systems, use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the same fields or menu names apply.

Weather and household demand

Even a correctly configured forecast is an estimate. Weather can change, solar production varies by season, and household demand may be irregular. A miss by itself does not prove that equipment is faulty. PG&E notes that an estimated bill becomes more accurate as more actual usage accumulates during the billing cycle, while future usage and the resulting bill cannot be predicted exactly. It says, “If your usage varies significantly from week to week, your forecast may be less accurate.” That is a PG&E explanation, not a universal description of every utility’s billing method.

Verify the readings and their coverage

Confirm the data is current

Monitoring displays may draw on an inverter, a separate monitor, or a smart meter, and may update on different schedules. Check that the relevant equipment is online and communicating, then note whether each figure is live or historical. Government guidance explains that some systems store historical operating data while simpler displays may show only current-day information.

Compare the same measurement boundary

A utility account, a real-time monitor, and an inverter app may not measure the same thing or calculate totals the same way. Match the date range, time zone, units, and boundary being measured before comparing numbers. For example, a solar-production total is not interchangeable with net energy imported from the grid.

PG&E specifically explains that its account view and monitoring-device data can differ because they use different approaches and calculations. Its estimated bill combines usage so far with projected use for the rest of the billing cycle. Utility practices vary by service territory, so consult your own provider’s explanation when an account or bill does not match a device.

Investigate implausible solar or meter totals

If solar production appears negative, doubled, stuck at zero, or otherwise implausible, ask the installer or qualified support to check the measurement setup. Relevant issues include CT (current transformer) orientation and placement, which conductors are measured, meter communications, whether every inverter output is included, and whether loads upstream or downstream of a sensor are missing from circuit totals.

Configuration errors can make a plausible-looking graph misleading. SPAN documents a case where configuring a solar breaker as an ordinary branch circuit can make production appear as home consumption; it also notes that some upstream or downstream loads may be absent from circuit totals. Tesla likewise recommends checking meters and CT placement before investigating the inverter itself.

Keep electrical sensor work with qualified support

Do not open an energized panel or adjust CT wiring yourself. Sensor orientation, calibration, panel configuration, and inverter wiring should be handled by the installer or qualified support. Tesla warns that CT adjustment must occur only after the system is completely powered down.

Thresholds are model-specific: Schneider says its Energy Monitor for Solar needs at least 500 W of total solar production to complete calibration. That is a requirement for that particular device, not a general rule for solar monitors.

Check cumulative totals in Home Assistant

If the Home Assistant Energy dashboard shows inflated totals, inspect whether cumulative sensors that reset at different times have been combined as one source. A temporary mismatch during different reset schedules can be recorded as a false value in long-term statistics.

  1. Add each cumulative sensor as a separate Energy dashboard source rather than combining sensors with different reset times.
  2. Inspect the recorded statistics for the period when the totals became inflated.
  3. Correct affected statistics if needed, following Home Assistant’s instructions for managing long-term statistics.

This applies to that dashboard pattern; it is not a general fix for incorrect readings in other platforms.

Monitoring features and compatibility vary by product. The available sources do not establish a controlled head-to-head accuracy ranking for consumer products, or a universal monitor that resolves forecast errors.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—show

There is no robust general statistic here for how often consumer smart-home energy forecasts are wrong or what their average error is. Device-specific calibration requirements should not be treated as forecast-accuracy rates. Likewise, the National Laboratory of the Rockies reports 5% to 12% whole-home energy cost savings for its foresee research system, but that result is not a forecast-accuracy measure or a guaranteed household saving.
