For a secure home network, choose the setup that covers your home reliably, then compare its security controls and keep its software current. The FTC, NSA and NIST offer router-security guidance, but the cited material does not establish a security winner between mesh and single-router layouts.
Mesh Wi-Fi vs. a single router: what changes security?
A single-router setup uses one device to route network traffic and provide Wi-Fi. A mesh system uses multiple access points to extend wireless coverage; the main mesh unit typically handles routing. Adding nodes can address weak-signal areas, but it does not by itself make a network more secure. Apply the same core protections to the routing and wireless equipment in either setup.
NIST’s September 2024 consumer-router cybersecurity profile sets out security requirements for consumer routers; it is not a controlled comparison of mesh and single-router security. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance likewise focuses on protections that apply to home routers and wireless networks generally.
How to choose the right setup for your home
Start with coverage
Identify where your Wi-Fi signal is weak and choose the equipment and access-point placement that cover those areas. A mesh system may suit a home where one router does not provide adequate coverage; if one router covers the areas you use, extra nodes are not a security requirement. The cited guidance does not prescribe a universal home-size threshold or mesh-node count.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Compare security controls, not labels
Before choosing a system, check whether it offers WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, unique administrative and Wi-Fi credentials, regular software updates, a firewall, guest access, and options to turn off remote management, WPS and UPnP. Also check whether the system lets you separate IoT devices from your primary network. Features and controls vary by product, so verify the documentation for the exact model rather than assuming mesh systems or conventional routers are alike.
Consider whether you can maintain it
Choose equipment whose settings you can understand and maintain across its router and access points. An app-based setup is not evidence of stronger security. Check how updates are delivered and, for ISP-provided equipment, ask the ISP about its update policy. The FTC advises considering a replacement if, after updating, a router still does not offer WPA2 or WPA3.

Secure either setup with these settings
- Choose encryption: Set Wi-Fi security to WPA3 Personal if the router and your devices support it. If older devices need it, use WPA2 Personal; NSA guidance also describes WPA2/3 for mixed device support. Use a strong Wi-Fi passphrase. (FTC; NSA)
- Replace defaults: Change the administrator password and Wi-Fi password to unique values, and use a network name that does not disclose personal information. Do not reuse the administrator password as the Wi-Fi password.
- Update the equipment: Install available router software updates. If your ISP supplied the equipment, check how it handles updates.
- Disable unneeded features: Turn off remote management, WPS and UPnP if you do not need them. Keep the router firewall enabled.
- Separate access: Create a guest network so visitors use separate credentials. Where supported, keep IoT devices on a separate network from your primary devices. NSA recommends separating primary, guest and IoT networks.
- Finish safely: Log out of the administrator account after configuration.
When IoT network controls can add another layer
Some network equipment supports Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), which can limit a compatible IoT device to the network communications it needs. NIST’s SP 1800-15 guide presents MUD as one measure alongside device updates and network segmentation—not as a replacement for either. Support depends on the device and network equipment.
