If your device is new or has just received a large batch of books, extra battery use during downloads, updates, and indexing may be temporary.
Lower the screen light without sacrificing comfort
Amazon advises lowering the built-in light because illuminated devices use more battery. Use only as much brightness as you need; turning the light off is not necessary if it makes reading uncomfortable.
- From the Home screen, swipe down to open Quick Actions, or open Settings. While reading, tap the top of the screen to access the reading controls.
- Adjust brightness with the scale or the plus and minus buttons.
- On compatible models, you can turn off the front light by long-pressing the brightness controls.

Turn off wireless when you do not need it
Wireless access uses power. Turn off the internet connection when you are not using it to download books or sync content, then turn it back on when you need those features. This is an optional tradeoff: leaving wireless on is more convenient, while switching it off between tasks can conserve power.

Amazon includes turning off the internet connection among its Kindle battery-conservation recommendations.
Use sleep mode and enable Power Saver
When you finish reading, briefly press the power button once to put the Kindle to sleep. Amazon also recommends enabling Power Saver in Device Options. It puts the device into a low-power sleep mode after a few hours without use.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Device Options.
- Turn on Power Saver.
Menu labels can vary by model or software version. Amazon’s battery guidance describes the feature and its purpose.
Allow for downloads, updates, and book indexing
A new or recently set up Kindle may use more power during its first few days as books download and updates install. Amazon recommends keeping it charging during this period.

Battery use can also rise after adding a large library. The Kindle indexes downloaded books so their contents can be searched. Amazon explains: “After downloading, your Kindle indexes your books to provide search capability, but it affects battery life.” Keep the device charging during large downloads and leave it connected for a while afterward so these tasks can finish.
Use a compatible charging cable and check your model
Amazon recommends a compatible USB cable, preferably the one supplied with the Kindle. If you need a replacement, confirm that it suits your device before buying; replacing a working cable does not increase reading time between charges.

Charging features depend on the exact generation and edition. For example, the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition supports wired charging and wireless charging with a compatible Qi-certified charger. Wireless charging is a convenience, not a way to extend battery life. Check Amazon’s Kindle setup guidance and guide index, and identify your Kindle model before choosing charging accessories or following model-specific directions.

Try the light, wireless, sleep, and Power Saver adjustments, and allow any recent downloads or indexing to finish. Amazon’s cited battery advice does not give a diagnostic threshold for battery failure, so unusually fast drain alone is not enough to establish that the battery is faulty. If the problem continues, consult Amazon Kindle support or the official troubleshooting information for your model.

Do not open the Kindle or attempt to replace its internal battery yourself. Amazon’s safety information for the Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation) says battery replacement should be performed only by a qualified service provider. Check the safety guidance for your exact model.
