The right contact depends on where you are and what happened: disease, invasive species, rescue, and ordinary sightings may all have different reporting channels. Describe observations as observations—not as a confirmed species identification or diagnosis.
First, keep people and animals safe
Observe from a distance. Do not touch, feed, capture, move, transport, or dispose of the animal, and keep children and pets away. A sick or injured animal should not be moved unless a wildlife professional or local authority instructs you to do so. Do not approach just to get a clearer photograph.
NSW Health’s public advice for sick or dead animals is “Avoid, Record, Report.” The specific safety instructions can vary by species and location, so follow current guidance from the local wildlife or animal-health authority.
Record what you actually saw
Before reporting, make a brief factual record. Useful details commonly requested by official reporting services include:

- When: the date and approximate time.
- Where: a GPS pin or coordinates, nearby road, landmark, or other precise location. Note whose property it is if relevant and known.
- What: visible features and behavior in plain language, without guessing a species or cause.
- How many: the number of animals, and whether each appeared alive, injured, sick-looking, or dead.
- How to follow up: your name and contact details if the form or agency requests them.
If it is safe to do so, take a few clear photos or a short video from a distance. Include enough of the surroundings to help establish context; do not get closer for a better image. Keep the original files rather than editing them in ways that could change relevant details. In California-specific invasive-species guidance, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says that including an object of commonly known size can help with comparison—for example, a coin or eyeglasses. That is optional supporting context, not a reason to approach wildlife.
A photo or video can help officials assess a report, but it does not by itself confirm a species identification or disease. If you are unsure, say so.

Find the reporting channel for the place and problem
Start with the official government website for the state, province, territory, or country where the sighting occurred. Search its wildlife, conservation, environment, agriculture, biosecurity, or animal-health pages, then choose a route that matches the incident. A general wildlife contact may not handle every category.
- Suspected invasive or non-native species: use the local invasive-species reporting route.
- Suspected disease or unusual deaths: look for animal-health or wildlife-disease reporting. If an official advisory identifies an urgent route, follow it.
- Injured or orphaned animal: contact the local wildlife rescue service, council, or veterinarian as directed by local guidance.
- Immediate public danger or other incident: use the relevant emergency or authority channel for that jurisdiction.
- Routine notable sighting: use a general wildlife-observation portal if the agency provides one.
For instance, California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s “Report What You’ve Seen” page separates routes for invasive species, wildlife incidents, dead fish or wildlife, and selected species sightings. Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry directs suspected H5 bird flu reports to its Emergency Animal Disease Hotline. These are local examples, not universal contacts. Check the current official page for your location and incident type.

Write the report without turning suspicion into fact
Use first-person, concrete descriptions: “I saw three birds unable to fly near the north entrance at about 4 p.m.” Or: “The animal appeared unable to stand; I could not identify the species.” Distinguish what you observed from what you suspect. Avoid naming a disease or claiming a cause unless an authority has confirmed it.
Use the reporting form’s fields and attach unaltered images if it accepts them. Include your contact information when requested so officials can follow up. If you do not know an answer, state that rather than filling the gap with a guess. Official forms commonly ask for descriptions, location, dates, counts, photos, or contact details; the agency is responsible for assessing the report.

Share publicly only when there is a reason
A social post is not a substitute for reporting an urgent concern through the official channel. If you need to alert others, link to an official advisory or agency page, identify unconfirmed details as unconfirmed, and avoid dramatic claims about a disease, cause, or population impact that have not been established. WOAH and INTERPOL provide guidance on misinformation and disinformation during animal-health emergencies; their guidance is broad, not a replacement for local reporting instructions.

- California: CDFW’s invasive-species guidance requests details such as date, description or condition, location, photos, and contact information. It handles animal and marine-plant sightings; certain plants, terrestrial invertebrates, and plant diseases are directed to the state agriculture department.
- Australia: DAFF advises people to keep their distance, record the date and time, location, description, and number affected, and take photos or video only if safe. For suspected H5 bird flu, it lists the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

- British Columbia: the provincial guidance says to photograph or record video, note the location, and not handle sick, injured, or dead wildlife. Do not move or touch sick or injured animals without professional instructions.
- Washington: the Washington Invasive Species Council recommends a photo, geotagged location, and contact method; its portal includes separate forms, including wildlife infectious-disease reporting.
- Hawaii: aquatic invasive-species reporting advice asks for date and time, location, organism description, a photo if possible, contact information, landmarks, GPS coordinates, and other details.
Choose between plausible reporting options
If more than one agency or form seems relevant, compare their stated scope and instructions rather than guessing which will respond fastest. Check whether the route covers your location and species, whether it handles disease or invasive-species reports versus rescue or routine welfare, how urgent the issue is, which contact methods it accepts, and what evidence or contact details it requests. Available information may not establish how quickly an agency will respond or what outcome a report will produce.
