You can schedule website screenshots to Google Drive with Google Apps Script, but Apps Script does not itself render a web page as a browser would. Use an external screenshot renderer: a time-driven Apps Script trigger calls its endpoint, receives image bytes, and saves them as a Drive file. Set the schedule to India Standard Time (Asia/Kolkata), and account for the fact that Apps Script triggers run approximately rather than at an exact minute.
How the workflow works
Google documents UrlFetchApp as a way to fetch resources and communicate with other hosts over the internet; it does not document it as a visual browser renderer. The screenshot must therefore come from a separate service that renders the target page. Apps Script can make the HTTP request, then use Drive to save the returned image data as a file. See Google’s UrlFetchApp reference and Drive service reference.
- Choose a renderer and confirm its endpoint, authentication, supported image format, viewport and full-page behavior, limits, pricing, data handling, and availability in India.
- Create an Apps Script project and configure the intended timezone.
- Add an installable time-driven trigger for a capture function.
- Call the renderer with
UrlFetchApp.fetch(), check the response, and save its image blob to a Drive folder. - Review execution history and retain useful status records without exposing credentials.
Set India time and schedule the trigger
Use Asia/Kolkata for an India-local schedule. In Apps Script, open Project Settings and set the project timezone deliberately; when configuring the time-driven trigger, choose the same timezone if the trigger builder offers that setting. A linked spreadsheet has its own timezone, so check it separately if the script uses spreadsheet dates or logs.
Create an installable trigger from the Apps Script editor using Triggers (the clock icon), then Add Trigger. Select your capture function, choose Time-driven, and select the desired cadence and time window. Google says clock triggers can run as frequently as every minute or as infrequently as monthly, but they are not exact cron jobs: a recurring 9 a.m. trigger may run at a time between 9 and 10 a.m., and retain that timing. The nearMinute() option has a plus-or-minus 15-minute window. Plan for an approximate schedule, not a precise capture timestamp. See Google’s installable triggers guide.

The trigger runs as the account that created it. That account must remain authorized and retain access to the destination folder. If it loses access or authorization, unattended captures can fail.
Apps Script integration outline
The following is a storage-and-request outline, not a provider-independent, ready-to-run integration. Replace the endpoint, request method, authentication, payload, and response checks with those specified by the renderer you select. Store the key outside source code shared with other users. Google’s UrlFetchApp documentation lists the external-request authorization scope as https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request; Apps Script usually detects scopes automatically unless you configure them explicitly.

function captureAndSave() {
const response = UrlFetchApp.fetch(RENDERER_ENDPOINT, {
method: 'post',
contentType: 'application/json',
headers: { Authorization: 'Bearer ' + getApiKey() },
payload: JSON.stringify({ url: TARGET_URL }),
muteHttpExceptions: true
});
const status = response.getResponseCode();
if (status < 200 || status >= 300) {
throw new Error('Renderer returned HTTP ' + status + ': ' + response.getContentText());
}
const image = response.getBlob();
const contentType = image.getContentType();
if (!contentType || !contentType.startsWith('image/')) {
throw new Error('Expected an image response; received ' + contentType);
}
const timestamp = Utilities.formatDate(
new Date(), 'Asia/Kolkata', 'yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss'
);
image.setName('site-' + timestamp + '.png');
DriveApp.getFolderById(DESTINATION_FOLDER_ID).createFile(image);
}
Define RENDERER_ENDPOINT, TARGET_URL, DESTINATION_FOLDER_ID, and getApiKey() for your project. If the renderer returns JPEG or WebP, choose a matching filename extension instead of .png. Verify that the provider’s response is image bytes rather than JSON or an error page before saving it. For shared-drive-specific operations, Google notes that you may need the advanced Drive service rather than the basic DriveApp service; see the Advanced Drive service documentation.
Choose a screenshot renderer
For a managed option, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF, and its clean-shot options can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Validate that its output and rendering options suit your particular page and workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
Apps Script still provides the schedule and Drive storage; ScreenshotNeo provides the rendered image bytes. The following cURL request saves a screenshot response to a local file. To automate it from Apps Script, adapt the request to the API’s documented endpoint, parameters, and authentication, then save the returned bytes as a Drive blob. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Authorize the script and Drive access
The first manual run may prompt you to authorize the script to make external requests and create Drive files. Review the requested access and approve it with the account that will own the trigger. If you have explicitly configured OAuth scopes in the Apps Script manifest, include the scopes needed for external requests and Drive access. A standard Google Cloud project may require the Drive API to be enabled, and a Workspace administrator can disable Drive SDK access for users. See Google’s Apps Script scopes guide and Advanced Drive service documentation.

Quotas, reliability, and cost planning
Google’s quotas page, last updated September 3, 2026, lists a maximum of six minutes per Apps Script execution for consumer and Workspace accounts, a maximum of 20 triggers per user per script, and daily total trigger runtime limits of 90 minutes for consumer accounts and six hours for Workspace accounts. Google says quotas can change without notice, so check the live quotas table for the account you use before setting capture frequency or processing many URLs.
Each capture also depends on the renderer’s availability, latency, request limits, and billing terms. Keep each run comfortably within Apps Script’s execution limit, especially if processing multiple URLs. Log the target URL, capture time, response status, and renderer error in a tracking sheet or execution log; never log API secrets. For repeated failures, use execution history to distinguish an Apps Script authorization or quota problem from a renderer response problem.

Troubleshoot failed or mistimed captures
- The saved file is not an image: The renderer may return JSON, an HTML error, or a different format. Check its documented success response, HTTP status, and content type before creating the Drive file.
- HTTP errors from the renderer: Confirm the endpoint, required parameters, authentication scheme, and URL encoding against that provider’s current documentation. Do not assume every service accepts the same method or bearer header.
- Authorization or access errors: Run the function manually as the trigger-owning account, approve the needed scopes, and confirm the account can edit the destination folder.
- The trigger runs at the wrong local time: Align the project and trigger timezone with
Asia/Kolkata; if spreadsheet dates are involved, verify the spreadsheet timezone too. Allow for Google’s trigger timing window. - Execution time exceeded: Reduce the number of URLs per run or increase the interval. Check current Apps Script quotas and the renderer’s response time.
- Drive file creation fails: Confirm the folder ID and write access. If the destination is a shared drive and basic Drive service behavior is insufficient, review the advanced Drive service requirements.
- Captures stop after working previously: Check trigger execution history, owner account authorization, Drive access, current quotas, and the renderer’s status and plan limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apps Script take a website screenshot by itself?
No. Its documented URL Fetch service makes HTTP requests; a separate browser-rendering service must produce the screenshot image.
Can I schedule a screenshot for an exact minute in India?
Not reliably with a standard time-driven trigger. Google describes trigger times as approximate, with `nearMinute()` allowing a plus-or-minus 15-minute window.
