Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor podcast episodes that share one layout, add a VLC Video Source to an OBS scene and place the local episode files in its playlist. OBS plays them in sequence without needing a scene change. If each episode needs its own scene or branding, use Advanced Scene Switcher to change scenes when the relevant media item ends.
Choose the right way to switch episodes
| What you need | Use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Episodes play in order with the same overlay and layout | One VLC Video Source playlist | The playlist advances between files; a scene change is unnecessary. |
| Each episode needs a different scene or branding | Separate episode scenes plus Advanced Scene Switcher | Configure a media-end condition and scene-switch action. Decide whether the trigger is an individual item ending or the whole VLC playlist ending. |
| One local video in a scene | OBS Media Source | It plays a single file; use VLC Video Source for playlist behavior. |
OBS describes VLC Video as supporting playlists, unlike the single-file Media Source. See the OBS Media Sources guide and the OBS Sources Guide.
Set up a VLC playlist for continuous episode playback
- Prepare local episode videos. Make sure the files are available on the computer running OBS. OBS’s standard Media Source documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Use files you have the right to broadcast.
- Install VLC. OBS needs the VLC application installed for the VLC Video Source to appear. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing after installation, close and reopen OBS.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene where the podcast should play, add a VLC Video Source. Add the episode files to its playlist in the desired order.
- Set playback order. Turn shuffle off for predictable episode order. Choose whether the playlist should loop, based on whether you want it to start again after the last episode.
- Arrange the scene. Position and size the source alongside any overlays, artwork, or other elements in the scene. The playlist changes files within the same source; it does not itself switch scenes.
- Preview the sequence. Check the end of one episode and the start of the next before going live. Confirm the order, playback, and any overlay behavior.
Switch scenes at episode boundaries
Use scene automation only if an episode change also needs a different OBS scene—for example, episode-specific branding or a distinct layout. Advanced Scene Switcher is a separate OBS plugin: its macros pair conditions with actions. The plugin’s resource listing reported version 1.36.1 and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1 when accessed on October 3, 2026. Plugin compatibility can change, so check the listing against your installed OBS version before installing.
- Install Advanced Scene Switcher using its OBS Forums resource page and follow the plugin’s installation guidance.
- In OBS, open the plugin’s interface and create a macro for the episode transition.
- Add a media condition for the source playing the episode, then add a scene-switch action for the scene that should follow.
- Choose the condition carefully: trigger on an individual VLC media item ending if each episode should cause a transition. Use a VLC playlist-ended condition only if the action should happen after the full playlist ends.
- Make a test run through an episode boundary and verify that the intended scene activates. The plugin’s update history distinguishes an individual media item ending from the VLC playlist ending.
The plugin’s current OBS requirement and version are time-sensitive. For setup context, see the OBS Sources Guide and the OBS forum discussion about playlist sequencing.

Check the stream before relying on automation
- Confirm every episode file is available locally and plays in the intended order.
- For a missing VLC Video Source, verify VLC is installed and that its 32- or 64-bit architecture matches OBS; reopen OBS after installing VLC.
- For a scene that does not change, verify the macro is enabled, the media condition points to the correct source, and the action selects the intended scene.
- If a transition fires at the wrong time, check whether the condition watches the current item ending or the whole playlist ending.
- Preview a complete transition before a live broadcast. The cited configuration documentation describes capability; it does not guarantee playback or plugin reliability in every setup.
