Start with View → Stats in OBS and watch the counters as the next playlist video begins. If Dropped Frames (Network) increases, troubleshoot the connection and bitrate. If Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag increases, investigate local GPU or encoder load. If none increases, the stutter may be on viewers’ playback side. A playlist transition can expose a problem, but the available OBS documentation does not establish that switching videos itself causes network frame drops.

Identify which frames are dropping

In OBS, open View → Stats. Note the counter values before and during a transition, and whether the problem appears in the OBS preview or recording, to viewers, or both. The counters distinguish transmission problems from local rendering and encoding work; “dropped frames” alone is not a diagnosis.

What changes at the transition What it points to First place to investigate
Dropped Frames (Network) increases Frames are not reaching the streaming service reliably at the configured bitrate. Upload stability, bitrate, route, Wi-Fi, and network software.
Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag increases OBS cannot get composed frames from the GPU to the encoder fast enough. GPU load and scene or source complexity.
Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag increases The encoding stage is not keeping up. Encoder workload, output demands, and the OBS log.
OBS counters remain steady, but viewers report buffering The problem may be playback or delivery on the viewer side rather than OBS dropping frames. Viewer device, connection, location, and platform delivery conditions.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, defines network-dropped frames as a connection to the remote ingest server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. It says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” referring to network drops as defined in that guide. OBS sends the stream directly to the streaming service, not through OBS-operated servers. An increasing network counter and a yellow or red connection indicator are signs to investigate that connection.

If Dropped Frames (Network) increases

Work through the connection before changing playlist-source settings. OBS recommends testing another available server, reducing the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and service limits, and using a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi where possible.

  • Ultra-low latency: Stay in the moment with ultra-low latency powered by USB 3.2 Gen 2, ensuring your broadcast and gameplay remain perfectly synchronized, delivering an immersive and responsive streaming experience.
  • Check upload stability and competing use. Pause other uploads or heavy network use during a short test. A speed test is only a snapshot; it does not prove that upload capacity remains stable throughout a stream.
  • Lower the video bitrate in small steps. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a “good starting point,” not a guarantee of sustained capacity. Leave headroom for other traffic and stay within the platform’s limits. Compare the network counter at the same transition after each change.
  • Test a different ingest server or route if one is available in your streaming setup. A route-specific problem can persist even when a general speed test looks adequate.
  • If you are using Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may help when local wireless instability is plausible. It cannot fix GPU rendering, encoding, playlist parsing, or a viewer-side delivery problem.
  • Check software and equipment only after the basic tests. OBS lists VPN or security software, network-optimization software, drivers, router or modem issues, and cabling among possible connection factors. Avoid replacing hardware until the counter and tests point to a local equipment fault.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during congestion to reduce drops, but it trades image quality for continuity and does not repair the underlying connection issue. If the problem continues after these checks, OBS recommends contacting your ISP. See the official OBS connection guide.

If Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag increases

Rendering lag occurs before encoding: OBS cannot obtain rendered frames from the GPU quickly enough. A transition may coincide with extra local work, but the counter—not timing alone—should guide the diagnosis. The OBS status-indicator guide lists maximumed GPU use and many video or graphical overlays as common contributors.

  • Watch GPU use while repeating the transition.
  • Temporarily simplify the scene: hide overlays and remove or disable nonessential graphical and video sources, then compare the rendering-lag counter.
  • Change one source or scene element at a time so you can identify whether the transition coincides with a local rendering load.

Advice to limit a game’s frame rate may apply to game capture, but it is not a general fix for a playlist-video transition. The relevant checks here are GPU pressure and the complexity of the scene OBS is rendering. See the OBS community resource “Status indicators and what they mean” (created and last updated May 8, 2020).

If Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag increases

Encoding lag is distinct from both network drops and rendering lag: the local encoding stage is not keeping up. Reduce encoding workload or output demands in controlled increments, then repeat the same transition and inspect the counter and OBS log. The log can help identify encoder-related problems.

There is no universal encoder, preset, or output setting to prescribe without your OBS log, encoder configuration, and stream settings. Avoid switching several settings at once: doing so can hide the cause or make the stream look worse without resolving the lag.

If OBS counters stay clear but viewers see buffering

First establish whether multiple viewers see the same interruption and whether it is visible in an OBS recording. If only some viewers report buffering while OBS counters remain steady, check their location, device, and internet connection before changing your encoder or upload bitrate. Different viewers have different devices and networks, and playback can buffer even when OBS is not dropping frames.

The OBS Help Portal explains that “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” Its Help Portal describes the behavior from OBS’s perspective; it does not mean every viewer-side buffering report is caused by an OBS network drop. OBS also recommends staying within platform recommendations. For further context, see OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting, published June 9, 2021.

Check the playlist source after recording the counters

OBS documents VLC Video as its playlist-capable source. It includes playlist controls such as Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist, a Visibility Behaviour setting, and a Network caching (ms) property. Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check the installed OBS version because menu labels and available options can vary.

For a regular Media Source, test the relevant playback options one at a time. OBS documents “Restart playback when source becomes active,” “Use hardware decoding when available,” “Show nothing when playback ends,” and “Close file when inactive.” Hardware decoding is available only for certain file types when compatible GPU decoding is available. “Close file when inactive” can free memory, but unloading and reopening the file may cause a short delay when the source becomes active again; disabling it retains more memory but avoids that reload behavior.

Run a controlled transition test

  1. Write down the OBS version, operating system, source type (VLC Video or Media Source), relevant stream settings, and which Stats counter changes.
  2. Repeat the same playlist transition in a local recording or a brief private or unlisted test stream. Note whether the defect appears in the recording, outgoing preview, or only to viewers.
  3. Change just one relevant item—for example, a source option in the playlist branch, bitrate or network route in the network branch, or scene complexity in the rendering branch.
  4. Repeat the transition and compare the Stats counters and OBS log. Keep a change only if it improves the relevant counter without creating a different problem.

This controlled comparison helps separate a transition that merely coincides with an existing bottleneck from a source-setting issue. If you need help interpreting the result, the most useful details to provide are the OBS version, source type, counter values before and during the transition, stream settings, and session log.

Or let it run in the cloud
