You can host a nonstop YouTube playlist stream on AWS Lightsail by running an encoder on a Lightsail virtual server and sending its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The server keeps the encoding process off your home computer, but a single VPS is not an uptime guarantee: its resources, network, encoder supervision, media files and YouTube ingestion all matter.
Before you start: check the channel and playlist
Confirm YouTube Live is available
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Check these conditions before paying for a server or preparing a long broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Clear the rights to every item
You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed for every video and audio item in the playlist, including music. YouTube’s live copyright checks can replace the live picture, interrupt the stream or terminate it. Even content you have licensed may require the rights holder to add your channel to an allowlist. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible, and reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Permission to broadcast a playlist does not guarantee it can be monetized. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Choose a Lightsail instance for your workload
Lightsail plans bundle compute, memory, SSD storage and a data-transfer allowance. As listed on AWS’s pricing page accessed October 3, 2026, the Linux/Unix public IPv4 plan starting at $5 per month includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer. Prices and allowances can change; check the current plan details before provisioning. AWS Lightsail pricing.
That entry plan is not a proven minimum for every playlist-streaming setup. The workload differs substantially depending on whether your encoder passes through compatible video or re-encodes it, and on the selected output settings and process overhead. The cited AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish a tested minimum Lightsail size for this job. Benchmark your own workload, monitor resource and transfer use, and leave headroom before relying on it unattended.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s configuration. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots or logs. Reset it if you believe it has been compromised. - Choose RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder ingestion. HLS is a separate option with different setup requirements and higher latency; use it only when your encoder or codec workflow calls for it. YouTube’s encoder settings and requirements.
Set the encoder to match YouTube
Follow the current YouTube settings table for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, supports up to 60 fps, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include:

These bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for the stated H.264 outputs, not universal values for other codecs or frame rates. Consult the current YouTube encoder guide for the complete settings table. Test with representative motion and audio, then watch stream health in YouTube Studio before leaving the broadcast unattended.

Keep the playlist running on Lightsail
Install and configure an encoder on the server to read the playlist or media files and send a continuous stream to YouTube. The exact installation commands and service configuration depend on your operating system, encoder and media workflow; the official guidance cited here does not prescribe a particular script or Lightsail image. Whichever implementation you choose, design for process supervision: decide how the encoder should restart after a failure and how you will learn that it has stopped or lost its connection. Those are operational choices to implement and verify, not automatic guarantees supplied by a Lightsail instance.
- Confirm the media files are present and readable by the account running the encoder.
- Check that the encoder uses the intended stream URL, protected key, codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval.
- Test representative audio and motion and confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Verify that your monitoring can distinguish a running process from a stream that YouTube is actually receiving.
- Review instance resource use and transfer consumption while the stream runs.
Plan for long-stream archives separately
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance recommends keeping a local backup, checking archive integrity and confirming that the local archive file is growing. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Do not make YouTube’s archive the only copy of a nonstop broadcast if retaining it matters. YouTube Help: Archive live streams and YouTube live-streaming tips.

A local recording is a separate storage workflow from the Lightsail encoder; an external drive is one optional place to keep that backup, not a requirement for sending the stream from the VPS.
Troubleshooting a Lightsail playlist stream
- YouTube does not receive video: Check that the stream URL and key are correct, the selected stream is live in YouTube Studio, and the encoder is using a supported protocol and codec. If the key may have leaked, reset it and update the encoder configuration.
- Stream health is poor or playback stutters: Compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate. Check the instance’s resource use and network/transfer usage; a plan’s inclusion of compute and transfer does not prove that it fits your particular encoding workload.
- The stream stops after running for a while: Check encoder logs and process status, then verify your supervision and alerting behavior. A VPS moves the job off a home computer but does not itself guarantee that the encoder or connection will remain uninterrupted.
- The live picture is interrupted or replaced: Review YouTube’s copyright notices and confirm that you have rights to all audio and video. For licensed content, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted.
- No archive appears for a very long broadcast: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use and verify a separate recording if you need an archive.
- The stream is available but monetization is limited: Check monetization policy as well as copyright status. Repetitive or mass-produced and reused content can raise policy issues even when copyright permission is in place.
