OBS does not guarantee that an edit made while streaming will load without resetting playback, so verify the result in the live output and have a tested fallback ready if an interruption would matter.
First, identify which playlist you need to change
A YouTube playlist on a watch page controls which videos viewers can play in YouTube. It does not add local video files to the signal your encoder is sending. If OBS is sending the broadcast, the playlist is part of the OBS scene and source that supplies its video.
- Several local files in OBS: Use the VLC Video source, which supports a playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS.
- One local file in OBS: Use Media Source and its Loop property to replay the file.
- A cloud playout service: Make playlist changes in that service’s controls; the OBS instructions below do not apply.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, lists Media Source and VLC Video for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It also says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Application labels or behavior may differ in later versions, so check the properties shown by your installed version. OBS Media Sources documentation
Change a multi-video playlist in OBS
- Find the source that feeds the live scene. In OBS, select the scene currently used for your broadcast and locate its VLC Video source in the Sources list. If you are unsure which source is on air, check the OBS preview before editing.
- Open that source’s properties. Select the VLC Video source and open its Properties. Review the listed files, their order, and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Add, remove, or reorder files in the playlist controls available in your installed OBS version.
- Check the loop setting. Confirm that Loop Playlist is on if the list should repeat. OBS’s cited documentation gives Loop Playlist a default of On and Shuffle Playlist a default of Off; do not assume your source still has those defaults.
- Apply the change and verify playback. Check that the expected item appears in the OBS preview, then check the actual YouTube live output. Confirm both that the intended video is playing and that the broadcast remains live.
OBS documents how to configure VLC playlists, but its guide does not promise a particular sequence for hot-reloading an edited list without resetting the current item. Do not treat an edit that appears in the preview as proof that viewers are seeing it.

Will changing the playlist interrupt the live stream?
There is no guaranteed answer for every OBS version and setup. The OBS guide does not say whether an in-place playlist edit will reload during an active stream without a reset. Community reports differ: one user said resaving a changed playlist at the same location worked once, but another change required restarting OBS and YouTube; another reported playback returning to the first video after editing or adding a source. A source reset or playback restart does not by itself show that the YouTube broadcast ended. YouTube represents the incoming encoder stream and the live broadcast as separate resources. Check the broadcast status in YouTube Live Control Room rather than inferring it from a change in OBS playback. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Reduce risk when continuity matters
If you cannot risk disturbing the current item, do not rely on an untested in-place edit. Prepare the revised playlist in an alternate scene or source, inspect it in preview, and switch only when it is ready. This is a cautious workflow based on OBS’s scene-and-source structure; it is not a guarantee of a seamless switch.
Test the exact edit procedure before using it on a broadcast where a reset would be costly. OBS’s Sources Guide recommends testing settings before a real stream, but does not prescribe a specific playlist-edit test. OBS Sources Guide

Check visibility behavior if the source is hidden
A VLC source can behave differently when it is not visible in the active scene. OBS’s documented Visibility Behaviour choices are to stop and restart playback, pause and unpause it, or always play. The documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If a scene transition hides the source, check this property before diagnosing the behavior as a YouTube broadcast interruption. This controls media playback, not whether the YouTube broadcast ends. OBS Media Sources documentation
What playlist looping does—and does not—keep running
Loop Playlist restarts media when the list reaches its end; it does not keep the whole broadcast healthy. The computer, OBS, network connection, encoder stream, and YouTube broadcast are separate parts of the setup. A playlist looping locally cannot ensure that those other parts stay connected. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the live broadcast from the incoming live stream, and describes activating a distinct broadcast using the same stream for a channel’s ongoing schedule; it does not say that an OBS playlist edit is interruption-free. Troubleshooting playlist changes
