To give specific people access, use Share privately and enter their email addresses. Invitees should open the video while signed in to the account you shared it with.
Choose Private, Unlisted, or Public
Choose the setting according to how tightly you need to control access. Private is for selected viewers; Unlisted is for anyone who has the link; Public is for open access.

Unlisted is not a substitute for Private: access depends on possession of the URL, and anyone who receives it can reshare it. If viewers need to comment, Unlisted is the non-public option that allows comments, but it does not limit access to named people.
Set an existing video to Private on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video and open its Visibility control.
- Select Private, then save.
The video is then unavailable in public YouTube search and on your channel’s Videos tab. You can still share access with selected viewers through Studio.

Make a new upload Private
During the upload workflow, go to the Visibility page, choose Private, and save or publish the upload. If you close the upload window before choosing visibility, YouTube says the video is saved as Private on the Content page. You can return to Studio later and change its settings or share it with selected viewers.
Change visibility in the YouTube mobile app
In the YouTube or YouTube Studio app, open the video’s edit controls, tap Visibility, select Private, and save. YouTube documents this basic setting for both Android and iPhone/iPad; labels may vary as app interfaces change.

Share a Private video with selected people
- In YouTube Studio, find the video and open its Visibility control.
- Select Share privately.
- Enter the viewers’ email addresses and save.
- Send invitees the specific video link and ask them to follow the invitation while signed in to the account you shared it with.
YouTube’s privacy help says recipients do not need a Google Account, while its troubleshooting guidance tells viewers to be signed in to YouTube with the account the owner used for sharing. For reliable access, direct invitees to the account named in your sharing invitation. If someone cannot open the video, first confirm they are using that account, then send the video link again.
Private videos cannot receive comments. If comments matter and you are comfortable with anyone who gets the link being able to watch and reshare it, change the video to Unlisted instead.

What Private does—and does not—hide
Private controls who can watch through YouTube’s sharing settings; it does not mean YouTube itself cannot review the video. YouTube Help states: “YouTube systems and human reviewers may review private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and other abuse prevention mechanisms.”
Private videos do not appear in public search results or in the channel’s Videos tab, but YouTube’s review processes still apply. Do not use Private as a way to bypass copyright or other platform rules.

Check older Unlisted videos if links stopped working
YouTube’s legacy-content guidance says that, starting July 23, 2021, unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made Private unless their owners opted out. YouTube notes that old unlisted links and embeds could stop working after the change. Open the video’s current Visibility setting in Studio to confirm its status, then change it if appropriate.
The same legacy guidance mentions sharing a legacy Private video with up to 50 email addresses and says recipients need a YouTube or Google account. Treat that as guidance specific to legacy unlisted content, not as a universal current limit for every Private video; check the video’s current sharing options in Studio.

Troubleshoot Private video access
- An invitee sees an access error: Ask them to sign in to YouTube with the account you shared the video with, then send the specific video link.
- The video is visible to people with the link who were not invited: Check that its visibility is Private, not Unlisted. Unlisted links can be forwarded.
- Viewers cannot comment: Comments are unavailable on Private videos. Use Unlisted only if link-based access is acceptable.
- An old link or embed no longer works: Check whether it was an Unlisted upload from before January 1, 2017 and whether it became Private under YouTube’s legacy change.
- You cannot find the video publicly: That is expected for Private videos; find and manage it in YouTube Studio under Content.
