To add a graphic overlay to a live stream, add it as a source in your streaming software, then size and position it in the scene preview. In OBS Studio, use an Image source for a static graphic such as a logo or border, or a Browser Source for web-based content such as alerts and chat. Streamlabs Desktop also supports installing or importing overlays, as well as building a scene with image files.

Image and browser sources serve different kinds of content; neither is universally better. The official workflow guidance does not establish a performance comparison between them.

Add a static graphic in OBS Studio

  1. Open the scene you want to use. In OBS, scenes collect the sources that make up a layout. Open the existing scene for your stream, or create a new one if you want a separate layout.
  2. Add an Image source. In the Sources panel, add an Image source and select the graphic file. OBS Image sources can display an image or slideshow.
  3. Size and position the graphic. Select the source in the preview and adjust it on the canvas. Place it so it frames the content instead of covering important gameplay, camera footage, captions, or platform interface elements.
  4. Check which scenes include it. Add the source to each scene where you want the graphic to appear. If it should be limited to particular layouts, keep it in those scenes rather than adding it everywhere.
  5. Review the full layout. Check the scene preview at the output canvas dimensions to confirm the graphic is visible and aligned before streaming.

Add alerts or chat with an OBS Browser Source

  1. Get the overlay page or widget details. Obtain the page or widget content from the service that provides it. Some services use a unique widget URL from an account dashboard; treat account-specific URLs as private.
  2. Add a Browser Source. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Browser Source. The OBS Project describes this as an embedded browser for web pages in a scene and lists alerts and chat boxes as common uses. Its documentation says, “This allows you to perform all sorts of custom layout, image, video, and even audio tasks.”
  3. Enter the page or widget and set dimensions. Use the correct URL or content and set the source width and height to suit the overlay’s intended canvas. For a Streamlabs widget, its instructions describe copying the unique widget URL from its dashboard and setting the browser source dimensions.
  4. Place it on the canvas. Confirm that the source appears in the preview, then resize and position it so it does not obscure the main content.
  5. Check the result in the scene preview. Confirm the source is visible and aligned before you start the stream.

Use an overlay in Streamlabs Desktop or OBS

Streamlabs Desktop

  • Install from the overlay library: choose a design, select the components you want, and install them into the scene collection.
  • Import an existing package: open Settings, go to Scene Collections, choose Import Overlay File, and select the .overlay file.
  • Build the scene manually: create a scene collection and scenes, then add image files under Sources for the visual elements you want.

Streamlabs plugin for OBS Studio

Streamlabs documents a plugin workflow in which you install the plugin, open its overlay settings, and select an overlay. Its quick-start documentation lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements. Some plugin changes may require restarting OBS. Requirements and interface labels can change, so check Streamlabs’ current documentation before installing.

Troubleshoot an overlay that is missing or misplaced

  • The browser overlay is blank: check that the page or widget URL is correct and available, and that the browser source dimensions are suitable.
  • The source exists but is not visible: check that it is not hidden or covered by another source, then confirm it appears in the scene preview.
  • The graphic is cropped or out of place: select it in the preview and adjust its size and position on the canvas.
  • The overlay appears in the wrong layouts: review which scenes contain the source and remove or add it where appropriate.
  • A plugin change does not appear: restart OBS if the change requires it, and verify that your Windows and OBS versions meet Streamlabs’ documented requirements.

These checks follow the documented source and widget workflows; they are troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee about every third-party widget or service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded recordings or a playlist, rather than an overlay on a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo can keep that pre-recorded stream running from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. Start the free first day.
