AWS Elemental MediaTailor Channel Assembly can create a continuously running linear channel by composing manifests from your on-demand assets into a playback schedule, optionally mixing in live sources and ad breaks. It does not store or deliver the underlying media segments: viewers’ players fetch those from your configured origin. The setup is to make your assets reachable, register them as sources, create a channel and outputs, schedule programs, then start and test playback.

How MediaTailor channel assembly works

Channel Assembly retrieves manifests from an origin and composes them into a live, sliding playback manifest. It tracks manifest details needed to make transitions between assets play smoothly, while the media segments remain at the origin and are delivered from there. It is a manifest-only service, not a transcoder or media-storage origin. AWS’s channel assembly overview describes the service model.

The main building blocks are a source location (the origin), VOD sources (individual content items and their package configurations), a channel (the linear stream), outputs (the formats and source groups exposed for playback), and a schedule (the order of programs). AWS documents origins including Amazon S3, web servers, CDNs such as CloudFront, and packaging origins such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage. See source locations, VOD sources, and channels.

Prepare compatible assets and manifests

Before creating the channel, make sure the origin can serve each asset’s manifest and the referenced media segments to the playback path. For each VOD item, plan at least one package configuration: it identifies the format, manifest location, and source group that a channel output will use. MediaTailor’s getting-started workflow documents HLS and DASH.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Check compatibility before registering a large library. Within a package configuration, sources need matching manifest-derived duration and the same number of child streams. Per-title encoding or automated ABR can create different durations or stream counts; AWS documents those incompatible cases as unsupported. AWS recommends an encoding template with a minimum segment length of one second. Consult the VOD source requirements and validate the actual manifests you intend to use.

  • Confirm that manifests and all referenced segments are accessible at the origin.
  • Choose HLS, DASH, or both based on the output formats your player ecosystem needs.
  • Check manifest-derived durations and child-stream counts for assets grouped under the same package configuration.
  • If using the getting-started ad-break workflow, prepare an ad slate at an accessible origin.

Create a source location

  1. In the AWS Elemental MediaTailor console, open Channel Assembly and create a source location.
  2. Give the location a name and enter the HTTP(S) base URL for the origin hosting the assets.
  3. Configure access authentication to match that origin. AWS’s source-location guidance confirms optional SigV4 authentication for S3; the right access setup otherwise depends on your origin and deployment.

A source location describes where MediaTailor should retrieve source manifests; it does not move or copy your media into MediaTailor. Follow the current AWS source-location instructions for the origin type you use.

Add VOD sources and package configurations

  1. Under the source location, add each VOD asset as a source.
  2. For each asset, provide the relative manifest path and create the package configuration or configurations required by your channel.
  3. For every package configuration, select the format and define a source group. Use consistent package characteristics for assets that may be scheduled together.

A channel output corresponds to a source group from a package configuration. If the channel should expose multiple formats, configure the matching package configurations and outputs rather than assuming one output covers every format. AWS’s VOD source guide explains the asset model.

Create the channel and its outputs

  1. Create a channel in the MediaTailor console.
  2. Choose the playback mode appropriate to the schedule. AWS’s getting-started tutorial uses loop mode for its VOD example.
  3. Add outputs that match the package source groups you configured, selecting the intended manifest format, such as HLS or DASH.

The output provides the playback endpoint for its format. Check the current console options and the AWS getting-started guide for the exact fields available in your account and service configuration.

Build a schedule for VOD, live, or both

Add programs to the channel schedule, selecting the source location and VOD source for each program, then arrange them in the order you want viewers to see them. In a loop-mode VOD channel, the schedule repeats according to the configured playback mode. AWS’s console guide to adding programs walks through schedule creation.

For a channel that includes live programming, configure a live source and schedule it alongside VOD programs using AWS’s documented live-source workflow. Scheduling behavior is not identical for every transition: AWS distinguishes relative transitions for VOD programs from absolute wall-clock transitions in eligible linear-channel configurations. Confirm which transition options the current console offers for your channel rather than assuming any schedule supports wall-clock timing.

Optionally configure ad breaks

For the documented VOD-program ad-break workflow, configure a slate source and an offset in the program. The slate’s duration sets the break length. The offset must be shorter than the program and align to segment boundaries across all tracks; otherwise, the break may be skipped. Follow AWS’s ad-break and SSAI instructions for the integration you choose.

MediaTailor ad insertion or another server-side ad insertion service can personalize breaks. Configuring a break does not establish that it will be filled with ads or generate revenue; those outcomes depend on the ad decisioning and inventory setup outside the basic channel schedule.

Start the channel and validate playback

  1. Start the channel in the MediaTailor console.
  2. Copy the playback URL for the output you want to test.
  3. Open the URL in a browser or the intended player and verify that the manifest loads and the scheduled content transitions as expected.
  4. Test each output format through the actual player and delivery path your viewers will use. The AWS setup guide gives output endpoints, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every player.

The official getting-started tutorial demonstrates starting the channel and opening its playback URL.

Common setup problems and what to check

  • A manifest or playback endpoint fails to load: Check the source location base URL, relative manifest path, origin reachability, and any origin authentication configuration. Also verify that manifests reference segments that remain accessible from the origin.
  • Some scheduled assets cannot be used together: Compare manifest-derived durations and child-stream counts within the relevant package configuration. Revisit encoding settings if per-title or automated ABR has produced inconsistent assets.
  • An ad break is skipped: Check that its offset is less than the program duration and aligned to segment boundaries across every track; confirm that the slate source and its duration are configured.
  • The channel plays but a target device does not: Test the output format with the actual player and delivery path. HLS or DASH output availability alone does not prove compatibility for every device or player.
  • A schedule transition occurs at an unexpected time: Confirm whether the configuration uses relative VOD sequencing or an eligible absolute wall-clock transition, and review the current schedule settings.

Cost and operational choices

AWS’s getting-started tutorial, as returned in 2026, estimates an active-channel fee of $0.10 per hour and says inactive channels are not charged. Treat that figure as a dated tutorial estimate, not a guaranteed current rate: verify the live AWS pricing page and applicable region before budgeting. This estimate is for the active channel and should not be treated as an all-in deployment cost for origins, delivery, ad services, or other AWS components.

Choose the configuration around your actual deployment: origin and access method; HLS, DASH, or both for your players; VOD-only looping versus a schedule that includes live sources; slate breaks versus personalized SSAI; and relative sequencing versus eligible wall-clock scheduling. These are configuration choices, not universal recommendations: origin capabilities, player support, and programming requirements determine the fit.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously running YouTube channel from uploaded recordings rather than an AWS-built linear service, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-live workflow or an AWS MediaTailor replacement. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
