If the request succeeded, verify the target URL and API key, then test page readiness, capture area, viewport, and resource-blocking settings one at a time. There is no single documented cause or guaranteed fix for every blank capture.
1. Check whether the API request succeeded
A blank-looking image and an API error are different problems. Note the HTTP status and response body before changing rendering settings. CaptureKit lists errors including bad requests, invalid API keys, payment-required responses, rate limits, and server errors. Its API Logs show the status code, duration, and credit cost, which can help establish whether the service returned an error or completed a capture with no visible content.
Use the status you actually received to guide the next step:
- Inactive or expired key: activate the key or replace it.
- Rate limit: back off before retrying.
- Payment required: resolve the billing issue.
- Forbidden: check the relevant permissions.
- Internal error: retry; if it persists, contact CaptureKit support.

2. Verify the key and target URL
The screenshot endpoint requires a target URL and an API key sent in the x-api-key header. Check that the URL is the page you intended to capture and that the key is active. To check authentication separately from screenshot rendering, CaptureKit recommends calling /v1/usage with the key.
Keep the API key on a backend server. Do not expose it in browser-side or mobile-app code, where users could retrieve it.
3. Give the page time to render
A successful request can still capture an empty state if the target page fills in content after its initial document load. For JavaScript-rendered pages, try an appropriate readiness condition, a short delay, or a selector that appears when the desired content is ready. CaptureKit supports wait_until values domcontentloaded, load, networkidle0, and networkidle2, plus wait_for_selector. Its documented delay range is 0–10 seconds.

These settings are alternatives to diagnose timing, not universal fixes. A selector that never appears can prevent a useful capture, and a network-idle condition may not suit a page that keeps making requests. Choose one change, capture again, and compare.

CaptureKit distinguishes what to capture from when to capture it. The selector option targets a page element; if it points to the wrong element or one that is empty or absent, the result may not contain the content you expect. Verify the selector against the rendered page, or temporarily remove it to test a normal page capture.
The documented defaults are a 1280 × 1024 viewport and full_page=false. A viewport screenshot shows only the visible area, so content below the fold may be missing rather than truly blank. If you need the whole page, test full_page=true.

Pages that load content while scrolling
Full-page capture and scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded elements are separate options. Both full_page and full_page_scroll default to false. If the page adds content or images as you scroll, test full_page_scroll=true as well; the documented default for full_page_scroll_duration is 400 ms. A full-page setting alone does not necessarily trigger scroll-dependent loading.
5. Temporarily remove resource and URL filters
CaptureKit can block resource types such as scripts, stylesheets, images, XHR, and fetch, as well as URLs through block_urls. It also offers selector-removal and ad-removal settings. These options can change what appears in a screenshot: for example, blocking scripts may prevent a page from rendering its content, while blocking stylesheets may leave the page looking unexpectedly empty or incomplete.
For diagnosis, temporarily remove block_resources, block_urls, remove_selectors, and ad-removal settings from the request. If the screenshot then shows the page, restore only the filters you need and add them back individually to identify the setting that changes the result.

6. Consider what the target page serves to the capture environment
Confirm the target is reachable by CaptureKit and consider whether it presents a sign-in page, bot check, region-dependent version, or empty state to the service. If the issue appears only at a particular screen size, compare the default viewport with the intended width and height or supported device emulation.
The endpoint supports a proxy option, but CaptureKit’s documentation does not promise that using a proxy will overcome a particular site restriction. Treat it as a request variable to investigate, not a guaranteed remedy.

- Record the status, response body, and API Logs details for the failing request.
- Check the API key independently using
/v1/usage, and confirm the target URL. - Remove any target selector and resource or URL filters for a baseline capture.
- Test one readiness option suited to the page, such as a selector for the content or a suitable
wait_untilcondition. - Compare viewport-only output with
full_page=true; if content is scroll-loaded, separately testfull_page_scroll=true. - Change viewport or device emulation only if the result suggests a size-dependent issue.
Changing one variable at a time makes each result informative. CaptureKit’s rendering guidance also identifies JavaScript execution and lazy-loaded images as considerations when assessing whether output is complete; see its website screenshot API guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank CaptureKit screenshot always mean the target website is down?
No. Check the API response and logs first; a successful capture can still be empty because of timing, capture settings, filters, or what the target serves to the capture environment.
Can I safely put my CaptureKit API key in frontend code?
No. CaptureKit advises keeping API keys on a backend rather than exposing them in browser or mobile code.
