To capture a page that requires authentication with ApiFlash, send the target site’s credentials in the headers or cookies parameter of a request to https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. Use headers for credentials such as a bearer token and cookies for an existing session cookie. Keep the ApiFlash access_key separate, and let your HTTP client encode the parameter values.
Choose headers or cookies for the target page
The right parameter depends on how the site authenticates you:
- Use
headerswhen the site expects a request header, such asAuthorization: Bearer …or a custom preview key. - Use
cookieswhen the site grants access through a session cookie. Authenticate through the site’s normal process, then provide the relevant cookie name/value pairs.
ApiFlash describes both approaches for authenticated captures in its FAQ. A target-site token or session cookie is not the same as the ApiFlash access_key: the access key authorizes your API request; the other credential authorizes access to the page.
Send credentials in a GET request
ApiFlash accepts GET parameters in the query string. Its documentation specifies semicolon-separated name/value pairs for both parameters and says their values should be URL-encoded. Use a query-parameter encoder rather than assembling a URL by concatenating raw credentials.

Custom request headers
For example, the logical headers value below contains two pairs: Authorization=Bearer YOUR_TOKEN and X-Preview-Key=YOUR_SECRET. Encode the full value so the spaces, equals signs, and semicolon are preserved as data:

The string above illustrates the encoded query, not a recommendation to expose credentials in a URL shared with users or logs.

Session cookies
The logical cookie value is sessionid=VALUE;theme=dark. Encode the complete value as one query parameter; ApiFlash’s documented encoding pattern represents equals signs and semicolons as %3D and %3B:

Send credentials with POST form data
If you prefer not to put request parameters in the query string, POST to the same endpoint and send access_key, url, and either headers or cookies as form fields. ApiFlash documents POST parameters as form data; use your HTTP library’s form encoder so separators and special characters are encoded correctly. Keep credentials server-side and avoid logging the form body.
Handle headers carefully
ApiFlash’s FAQ notes that custom headers apply to all page requests, not just the main document. That may include external resources such as Google Fonts and other CDNs. A header intended for the target page can therefore affect font requests, which browser security restrictions may block.

- For session-based authentication, prefer
cookieswhen the target site supports it and the required session cookie is available. - If a header is necessary, check whether the capture loads third-party resources correctly; self-hosting fonts is one option ApiFlash mentions.
Protect credentials and diagnose API errors
- Keep secrets out of browser code. Treat the ApiFlash access key, authorization tokens, and session cookies as credentials. A backend proxy can keep an access key away from end users; ApiFlash’s guides index includes proxying approaches. Review the design against your application’s security needs.
- 401: ApiFlash documentation identifies an invalid or revoked access key as a cause. Check the API key first; this is distinct from the target site’s token or cookie.
- 403: The requested feature may not be supported by your plan, according to ApiFlash’s documentation.
- 429: The documentation lists this for rate limiting. It currently states a rate of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400; excess ordinary-rate requests are delayed, while requests over the burst size are terminated with status 429. The documentation page does not state a publication year, so check it for current limits before relying on these figures.
- Repeated identical failed captures: ApiFlash says requests with exactly the same parameters that fail to capture are rate limited at five per hour. Change the underlying cause before retrying repeatedly; the documentation page does not state a publication year.
If the capture reaches the page but authentication fails, verify that the credential belongs to the target site and is still valid, that the site expects the chosen mechanism, and that the encoded parameter decodes to the intended name/value pairs.
