Start with Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to identify which apps or features are using the most power. Then inspect the high-use app’s background activity and permissions. The four permissions in the original title aren’t identified, so there’s no reliable basis to name a specific four-permission checklist or claim that any permission caused the drain. Treat permissions as clues to investigate, not proof.
Find what is using the battery before changing permissions
Android’s consumer guidance recommends opening Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and looking for apps or features with unusually high power use: Google’s Android battery guidance. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and phone maker, so your device may use slightly different wording.
This screen helps narrow down what to investigate; it does not show that a permission caused the usage. If a particular app stands out, consider what it does and whether it needs to work while you are not using it.
Review an app’s background activity
On supported Pixel phones
Google’s Pixel instructions direct users to Settings > Battery > Battery usage, then to select an app and review Allow background usage. Google recommends keeping Optimized enabled for all apps: Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting guide.

If you change this setting, do so for a specific app you have reason to investigate rather than disabling background activity across the board. Some steps in Google’s guide apply only to Android 14 and later, and its battery diagnostics are available on Pixel 6 and later. Those qualifications apply to Pixel devices, not Android phones generally.
Consider whether background location is necessary
Background location is one permission worth reviewing when an app appears to use significant power. Android’s developer guidance warns that background location can significantly affect battery life: Android background location documentation. That makes it a possible mechanism, not proof that location caused the drain on your phone.

For Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, Android limits how often an app running in the background can receive location updates to a few times each hour. The same guidance says most location use cases need access only while the user is engaging with the app: Android background location limits.
Match access to the feature you want
Navigation, safety tools, fitness tracking and location sharing may need location while an app is not on screen to provide features you expect. Decide whether that use is necessary for the app’s core function, then choose the least access that still supports the feature you want. Google Play policy says background access should serve core functionality and provide significant user benefit; it should not be requested solely for advertising or analytics: Google Play’s background location policy.

Avoid disabling essential services indiscriminately
Not every background task is unnecessary. Google cautions that force-stopping essential apps or services can make a Pixel phone work incorrectly. Investigate an app that stands out in battery usage, but don’t force-stop system services or change settings without considering what the app does.

This is an app-quality threshold for developers, not a consumer battery-drain estimate or evidence that a permission on your device is responsible. Google says audio playback, location access and user-initiated data transfers may be exempt when they provide clear user benefits that cannot be further optimized.
