Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() to save a website image, and make sure the Ubuntu machine running Chrome has a font that includes Devanagari glyphs. The example below captures the full page as a PNG; use fullPage: false for only the visible viewport. Puppeteer documentation version 25.12.0 requires Node.js 22.12 or newer, and its Chrome for Testing support includes Debian/Ubuntu on x64 and arm64. These requirements can change, so check the current system requirements before installing.
Set up Node.js, Puppeteer, and Ubuntu’s browser dependencies
This example uses an ES module project and Puppeteer’s bundled Chrome for Testing. It is illustrative and has not been run as an installation test; Ubuntu release, browser build, and site behavior can affect the setup.
- Check Node.js: run
node --version. For Puppeteer documentation version 25.12.0, use Node.js 22.12 or newer. - Create a project and install Puppeteer: run
mkdir hindi-screenshot && cd hindi-screenshot, thennpm init -yandnpm install puppeteer. - Use the current Ubuntu dependency list if Chrome cannot launch: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists Linux dependencies and explains how to inspect missing shared libraries with
ldd. Package names may differ across Ubuntu releases and browser builds, so use that guide rather than copying an old package list. - Check the browser architecture: Puppeteer lists Debian/Ubuntu x64 and arm64 for Chrome for Testing support. Confirm the actual host and installation meet the current requirements.
Make a screenshot that includes Hindi text
Save this as screenshot.mjs. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. The script sets a viewport, waits for navigation to reach a network-idle condition, saves a full-page PNG, and closes Chrome even if navigation or capture fails.

}Run it with node screenshot.mjs. Puppeteer’s screenshot API accepts a file path; the file extension can determine the image type. For this example, the output is website-hi.png. The networkidle2 wait condition is not proof that every site-specific font or late-loading element has finished rendering. If the page has a known ready selector or application signal, wait for that instead, then inspect the saved image.

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture

Choose based on the image you need, not Hindi text alone: a larger viewport does not add font coverage, and an installed Devanagari font does not decide whether the capture should include the full page.
Make sure Hindi glyphs have a font
If Devanagari letters appear as empty boxes or missing-glyph symbols, check fonts on the Ubuntu machine where Chrome runs. The fonts-noto-core package provides broad Unicode coverage; Ubuntu Jammy package file records include Noto Sans Devanagari regular and bold files at /usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto/NotoSansDevanagari-Regular.ttf and its bold counterpart. The Noble package record also describes broad Unicode coverage. This does not mean the font is installed on every minimal Ubuntu image.

- Check whether a Devanagari-capable font is installed on the host or in the container running Chrome.
- If the required font is absent, install an appropriate package such as
fonts-noto-coreusing the package manager for that Ubuntu release. - Capture again and inspect the actual Hindi text. If the site depends on a remote web font, use a page-specific readiness condition where possible; no fixed delay is guaranteed to cover every site.
Troubleshoot blank, incomplete, or failed captures
Chrome exits immediately or reports a missing shared library
The browser may lack a Linux runtime dependency. Follow the current Ubuntu/Debian dependency list in Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide; its instructions include using ldd to identify missing shared libraries. The required packages can vary with Ubuntu and the browser build.
Chrome fails under Ubuntu 23.10 or newer
Puppeteer documents an AppArmor issue that can restrict user namespaces for Puppeteer-downloaded Chrome for Testing binaries under certain profile and path conditions. Follow the guide’s host-specific workaround and keep sandboxing enabled where possible. Puppeteer states: “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged.” Do not treat --no-sandbox as a routine fix.

Hindi characters appear as boxes
Chrome may not have access to a font with Devanagari coverage. Check font availability on the actual machine or container that launches Chrome, then capture and visually inspect the output. A font on your development laptop does not help if the script runs elsewhere.
The screenshot is blank or misses late content
A navigation wait condition such as networkidle2 does not guarantee that a particular application has rendered its final content. Wait for a selector or application-specific ready signal, then verify the image. A fixed sleep is not a universal font-loading or rendering guarantee.

The image has the wrong dimensions or extent
Set the viewport explicitly with page.setViewport() and choose whether to use fullPage: true. Without a requested headless window size, Puppeteer documents a default screen of 800×600. For only one component, capture its element rather than the whole document.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a bigger viewport fix missing Hindi characters?
No. Viewport size controls page geometry; a Devanagari-capable font must be available to Chrome separately.
Does `networkidle2` guarantee that a remote Hindi font has loaded?
No. It is a navigation wait condition, not a universal font-readiness guarantee. Use a page-specific readiness signal when available and inspect the screenshot.
