Set JPEG quality with page.screenshot()
Use an explicit JPEG type so the output format is clear, and set a quality value within the documented 0–100 range. This example saves a file:

Choose and validate a quality value
The API documentation does not recommend one best value or specify how a given value maps to bytes or appearance. Choose based on your own fidelity and size requirements, then inspect representative screenshots using the browser and runtime you deploy.

This is a project-specific check: the official reference defines the setting range but does not provide a benchmark across values, operating systems, or browser builds.
Return the screenshot instead of saving it
Without a path, page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array by default. You can also request a base64 string with encoding: 'base64', as described in the method reference. The Puppeteer screenshots guide shows saving a capture to a path.

If you omit type, Puppeteer infers the screenshot format from the file extension. For unambiguous JPEG output, specify type: 'jpeg' and use a .jpg or .jpeg filename. The documented options are on the ScreenshotOptions page.

Troubleshoot common mistakes
- The capture is not JPEG: Set
type: 'jpeg'. If relying on inference, verify the path has a JPEG extension. - Changing
qualityhas no effect on PNG: It is not applicable to PNG. Use JPEG if you need the JPEG quality setting. - The output is larger or looks different than expected: The documentation does not promise a fixed size or appearance for a given value. Inspect representative output in your deployed runtime and adjust the setting for your needs.
- An older Puppeteer release behaves differently: The current API reference displayed version 25.12.0. Puppeteer’s changelog records a correction to quality-parameter validation in 22.13.0, released 2024-07-11. Check the changelog and the reference for your installed release rather than assuming current documentation applies unchanged.
