To send a GStreamer pipeline to YouTube, create or select a live event, copy YouTube’s ingest endpoint and stream name, then encode video and audio, mux them as FLV, and send the result over RTMPS. The exact sink element and its properties depend on your installed GStreamer build, so inspect them before relying on a command in production.

What the pipeline needs to do

A basic live pipeline has four jobs: produce or capture video and audio, convert each stream into formats the encoders accept, encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then mux both tracks into FLV for delivery to YouTube. The final sink must support the chosen ingest protocol.

Conceptually, the graph is:

video source → conversion and caps → H.264 encoder → H.264 parser ┐
├→ FLV muxer → RTMPS sink
 audio source → conversion/resampling → AAC encoder → AAC parser ┘

GStreamer documents x264enc as a libx264 H.264 encoder, flvmux as an FLV muxer, and rtmpsink as an RTMP sender. Availability, properties, and TLS behavior depend on the installed plugins and build. See the GStreamer plugin index.

Using Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the ingest endpoint and stream name shown for the event. Keep the stream name private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.

Using the YouTube Live API

For automation, create or retrieve the relevant API resources. A liveBroadcast represents the event; a liveStream represents the incoming feed and contains ingestion information. One broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused across events. The API’s broadcast and stream guide explains the relationship, and the LiveStreams reference documents stream fields and health information.

  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

An API stream-insert request requires a title and CDN settings that specify ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. Creation may fail if the account does not have live-streaming permission or is blocked from live streaming. See LiveStreams: insert.

Choose RTMPS and protect the stream name

RTMPS is the practical choice for the common low-latency encoder workflow described by YouTube. Use the endpoint and stream name in the format expected by the sink element, and confirm that the complete destination is an rtmps:// URL. YouTube’s RTMPS ingest requires port 443 and TLS SNI set to the target server hostname; a cleartext rtmp:// connection is not RTMPS. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide for current endpoint details.

Build and validate the GStreamer graph

Start with a sketch, not a universal command

This is an architectural sketch, not a verified command line for every GStreamer installation. Replace the source elements, caps, encoder settings, and sink properties with values supported by your build and actual sources:

video source ! videoconvert ! video caps ! H.264 encoder ! h264parse ! mux.video
 audio source ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! AAC encoder ! aacparse ! mux.audio
flvmux name=mux streamable=true ! RTMPS-capable sink location="<YouTube RTMPS endpoint>/<stream name>"

The sketch shows the needed branches: each source is converted and encoded, parser elements prepare encoded streams, and both tracks feed the FLV muxer before the sink. A real pipeline must use source elements appropriate to the capture device or media input, compatible caps, and an RTMPS-capable sink whose URL handling matches YouTube’s endpoint format.

Check your installed elements and properties

Before adapting the sketch, verify which GStreamer version and plugins are installed, then inspect the sink element’s available properties and TLS support. In particular, the old librtmp-based rtmpsink and rtmpsrc are deprecated in GStreamer 1.28 release notes and scheduled for removal in the next release cycle. Do not assume a command using them will remain available or provide the required TLS behavior in your deployed build.

Match the output and test locally

  1. Choose output resolution and frame rate to match the stream configuration and current YouTube encoder guidance. The documentation cited here does not establish a specific bitrate or frame-rate prescription, so do not treat an arbitrary sample value as a YouTube requirement.
  2. Use a supported codec and configure a closed GOP. Ensure the outgoing feed contains exactly one audio track and one video track.
  3. Begin with a controlled test source or local input. Confirm the negotiated caps and verify that both encoded tracks reach the muxer.
  4. Watch the GStreamer bus for errors and YouTube’s stream status and health diagnostics after sending the feed.

Use YouTube health messages to find the fault

YouTube health diagnostics identify problems including missing audio, missing video, unsupported video codec, open GOP, and mismatched primary/backup stream settings. These messages help narrow the problem to a track, encoding, or configuration issue; the LiveStreams reference describes stream health.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Check YouTube’s stream state and health message. Start with the reported symptom rather than changing unrelated settings.
  2. Confirm the destination. Verify the endpoint, stream name, RTMPS scheme, port 443, and TLS/SNI behavior. Make sure the stream name has not been revoked or replaced.
  3. Confirm the sink exists and supports the destination. Check the installed GStreamer version, plugin availability, sink properties, and TLS support; older librtmp-based elements may not be suitable.
  4. Inspect caps and track flow. Confirm that one video and one audio track negotiate successfully, use supported encodings, and both reach the muxer.
  5. Review encoder settings and bus errors. Correct codec or GOP issues indicated by YouTube, and use GStreamer’s error output to identify local negotiation, plugin, or connection failures.

Choose manual setup or API automation

Approach Best suited to What to account for
Live Control Room A manually started event or a straightforward setup. You obtain and configure the event and ingest details in YouTube’s interface.
YouTube Live API Systems that create or manage events programmatically. Manage the distinct broadcast and stream resources, supply required title and CDN settings, and handle permission-related creation failures.

Likewise, choose among sink implementations based on the installed build’s protocol and TLS support, not an assumed performance advantage. Reusing a stream can suit multiple events; creating a separate stream may suit workflows that need separate ingest configurations. The API documentation establishes that reuse is possible, but the right operational choice depends on how you manage events and credentials.
