Sometimes. Viewers can skip a YouTube ad only when it is a skippable format; YouTube says skippable video ads can be skipped after five seconds. Non-skippable ads must play before the viewer can watch. For a 24/7 stream, YouTube’s guidance does not describe a different rule based on how long the stream runs.
When can viewers skip a live-stream ad?
If YouTube serves a skippable ad, a viewer can use its skip control after five seconds. YouTube’s live-stream guidance says viewers who see an ad return to the live stream when the ad ends or when they choose to skip it. A non-skippable ad has no skip option and must finish before the video resumes. YouTube’s ad-format guidance describes the five-second rule for skippable video ads.
That rule concerns the ad format, not whether the stream is live or recorded. YouTube does not identify a special skip rule for 24/7 streams, so stream duration alone should not be taken to make an ad more or less skippable. YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance explains what happens when ads are shown during a live stream.
Why viewers may have different ad experiences
- Different ad formats: Some ads offer a skip control after five seconds; non-skippable formats do not.
- Different ad delivery: YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will appear in every available slot. Its systems decide whether to serve one, and a viewer who is not served an ad continues watching the stream.
- Different timing: Viewers can encounter ads at different times. An ad opportunity does not mean every viewer will see an ad at that moment.
Pre-roll and mid-roll ads are placement choices, not skip settings
Monetized live streams can show pre-roll ads before viewing and mid-roll ads during the stream. Pre-roll ads run automatically. Mid-roll opportunities may be automatic, scheduled, or manually inserted, subject to eligibility and YouTube’s decision about whether to serve an ad. These controls affect when an ad opportunity is offered; they do not determine whether the ad itself can be skipped.

YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and says they can be placed at natural breakpoints. It also reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour, in an average comparison across 207 countries described for January 2024. That is a reported comparison, not a promised result for an individual channel, and it says nothing about whether viewers can skip a particular ad. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
Does stream orientation change ad skipping?
YouTube’s current live-stream comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal streams, but not for vertical live feeds. This distinction concerns whether those live ad placements are available; it does not change the skip behavior of an ad that is served. Does a 24/7 stream guarantee recurring ads?
No. A continuous stream does not guarantee that every viewer receives an ad, nor that an ad will appear at a fixed interval. Ad slots are opportunities, and YouTube decides whether to serve an ad. Viewers may therefore continue watching without an ad, see an ad at a different time from other viewers, or encounter an ad that is not skippable.
