To publish a podcast episode on YouTube with a custom background image, either make a video that combines the episode audio and image, then upload it, or—if RSS podcast delivery is available to your channel—submit your feed and let YouTube generate static-image videos from your show artwork. A YouTube podcast is a playlist of videos, so an MP3 by itself is not an episode. YouTube Help describes the format this way: “On YouTube, a podcast show is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos in that playlist.” YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
Choose how to add your podcast episode
Use a prepared video upload if you want to choose a distinct background or visual for each episode and control the finished video file. Use RSS ingestion if your audio-first show has an RSS feed and the feature is available in your country or region; YouTube can turn the show artwork into static-image episode videos and ingest new feed episodes automatically. The two routes have different correction and publishing controls, so choose before setting up the episode.
| Workflow | Best suited to | What YouTube creates or receives | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepared video upload | Creators who want a custom image or other visuals for each episode | A finished video file containing the audio and image or video | You must create and upload the video yourself; an MP3 alone cannot be added as a podcast episode. |
| RSS ingestion | Audio-first shows with a feed, where the feature is available | YouTube generates static-image videos using the show’s artwork | RSS ingestion is region-limited; published YouTube details and audio do not automatically update when the feed changes. |
YouTube also identifies audiograms and dynamic video as options for making an audio podcast audiovisual. Its RSS and distribution guidance describes these workflows, rather than establishing that one format will perform better than another. RSS feed delivery · Podcast distribution on YouTube.
Option 1: Make a video with your custom background and upload it
1. Prepare the episode video
Combine the episode audio with the image you want viewers to see, then export a video file. This can be a static image for the full episode or an audiovisual treatment such as an audiogram. YouTube’s podcast guidance recognizes static-image uploads as one way to publish an audio podcast; it does not require a camera, microphone, or studio hardware for this workflow. Upload the finished video to your channel, then add it to the podcast playlist as an episode. A podcast playlist should contain full-length episodes, not clips or unrelated videos. An audio file alone cannot serve as the episode video.
4. Add an episode thumbnail if you want one
The podcast artwork and the episode video’s thumbnail serve different surfaces. YouTube recommends square 1:1 artwork for the podcast, with 1280 × 1280 pixels recommended for the podcast thumbnail. Video thumbnails are generally 16:9. If both surfaces matter, prepare separate square and 16:9 files rather than assuming the square cover replaces the video thumbnail. Custom video thumbnails require an eligible account. YouTube’s stated file-size limits vary by device, so check the live Help page before exporting. Option 2: Let YouTube create static-image episodes from an RSS feed
1. Confirm RSS ingestion is available

If the RSS option is not available for your account or region, use the prepared-video method instead. Deliver podcasts using an RSS feed.
2. Review the generated episodes before publishing
YouTube uses the show’s artwork to generate a static-image video for each selected episode. New feed episodes can upload automatically. During RSS setup, the uploads begin as private, giving you an opportunity to review them before making the podcast public. Check the generated episode, artwork, title, and visibility before publishing.

3. Understand what feed changes do—and do not do
RSS ingestion does not distribute the show to other podcast platforms. Changes to show details in the source feed do not automatically synchronize to YouTube, and changing the source audio does not replace audio in an already-published YouTube episode. To correct episode audio, re-upload it from the RSS feed; the previous YouTube video becomes private. Use YouTube’s publishing controls to review which episodes are published or disconnected. Publish or disconnect episodes from an RSS feed.

Organize episodes for listening
- Create one podcast playlist per show and include full-length episodes from all seasons. Avoid mixing clips, different shows, or videos uploaded from other channels.
- Use the show’s name as the podcast title and provide a useful description. Title each video by its episode name; adding the show name is optional.
- For episodic shows, YouTube suggests ordering episodes newest to oldest. For serial shows, it suggests oldest to newest so listeners can follow the story.
Podcast playlists may receive features such as YouTube Music availability and audio-only playback, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Content not owned by the creator can make a playlist ineligible, and promotional Shorts do not appear in YouTube Music. Podcast discovery tips · Podcast creation and features.
Check rights, sponsorship disclosures, and monetization considerations
Review episodes for copyright and monetization issues before publishing. If an episode includes branded content such as a host-read promotion, sponsorship, or endorsement, use the relevant YouTube disclosure setting and follow applicable policies. Static artwork does not remove the need to have rights to the audio, image, or other material in the episode. RSS delivery guidance.
