Yes. Super Chat may be available when you send a pre-recorded video to YouTube as an encoder-fed live broadcast, provided your channel is eligible and Live Chat is enabled. A scheduled YouTube Premiere is the simpler native option when you want viewers to watch an uploaded video together and chat. Neither is the same as an ordinary video upload or a finished replay.
What counts as a pre-recorded live stream?
“Pre-recorded” describes the source video, not the YouTube format. If an encoder sends that video to YouTube as a live feed and you start a live event, it is an encoder-fed broadcast. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming, but does not describe a dedicated setting that turns an ordinary upload into a live stream. Using a file as the encoder’s source is therefore a workflow based on the encoder setup, not a special YouTube mode. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide explains the encoder workflow.
Super Chat is for eligible live chats. YouTube describes it in the context of live streams and Premieres; its availability is not established for a finished replay or an ordinary upload. YouTube’s Super Chat help page describes the feature and its requirements.
Choose an encoder-fed live stream or a Premiere
| Format | How the video reaches viewers | Chat and Super Chat | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encoder-fed live broadcast | An encoder sends a live feed to a YouTube event. The feed can use a prerecorded file as its source. | Super Chat may be available if the channel is eligible and Live Chat is enabled. | You need a live-event workflow and encoder controls. |
| YouTube Premiere | You upload a video and schedule or start it as a shared viewing event. | Viewers can chat and give Super Chats if the feature is turned on and the channel is eligible. YouTube’s Premiere guide describes this option. | You want viewers to watch an uploaded video together without sending it as an encoder feed. |
| Ordinary upload or finished replay | Viewers watch a video on demand after upload or after a live event ends. | The cited YouTube help describes Super Chat during live streams and Premieres, not as a feature enabled on the finished replay. | You want on-demand viewing rather than a live chat event. |
Check eligibility before setting up the event
Super Chat eligibility
Check the channel’s current Super Chat eligibility and available fan-funding settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube points creators to its eligibility requirements, and availability can depend on the channel and location; there is no universal answer for an individual account. Live Chat and audience settings
Super Chat depends on a supported live chat. If a video or channel is set as made for kids, YouTube disables Live Chat and Super Chat, so the feature will not be available for that event. Check the audience setting rather than trying to fix the issue through the encoder. YouTube explains the restrictions for made-for-kids content.
Live-streaming access is a separate requirement
Channel verification and the absence of live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days are requirements for live streaming, not proof of Super Chat eligibility. Check both the ability to stream and the channel’s separate fan-funding status. YouTube’s live-streaming guide covers setup access.

How to send a pre-recorded video as a live event
- Confirm access and eligibility. In YouTube Studio, verify that the channel can live stream and check whether Super Chat and Live Chat are available for your account and event.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, and use Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream. YouTube’s labels may change; follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
- Connect an encoder. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Set the video file as the encoder source. Configure the encoder to play the prerecorded video into the stream, then start sending the feed. This uses the encoder workflow; YouTube does not document a separate “prerecorded live” switch.
- Preview before going live. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room and check picture, sound, and playback. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance and reviewing the preview before starting. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Start the event and check chat. Once the preview is correct, start the stream in the encoder and Live Control Room as prompted. Confirm that Live Chat is available and that the event’s monetization or fan-funding controls offer Super Chat.
YouTube describes encoders as tools for sending feeds that can include overlays and hardware such as preamps, microphones, and cameras. Those devices are optional production choices; buying equipment does not establish Super Chat eligibility, and YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. YouTube’s setup tips.
If you only need a shared viewing event, create a Premiere
- Upload the video to YouTube and choose the option to set it as a Premiere.
- Schedule the Premiere or start it, then direct viewers to its watch page.
- Check that Live Chat is available and that Super Chat is enabled for the eligible channel.
YouTube says viewers can visit the Premiere watch page, set a reminder, chat, and give Super Chats if turned on. After the Premiere, the video remains a regular upload. Premiere details are in YouTube Help.

Troubleshoot missing Super Chat or chat
- Super Chat is missing in Studio: Check current channel eligibility and location availability. Live-streaming access alone does not guarantee fan-funding access.
- Live Chat is unavailable: Check whether the event or channel is designated made for kids, and verify that chat is enabled for the event.
- The event has no incoming video: Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, that it is sending the file, and that the preview has appeared in Live Control Room before going live.
- You expected Super Chat on the replay: Super Chat is described for live streams and Premieres, not as a feature of the finished on-demand replay. Use a live event or Premiere for the real-time chat moment.
- The stream cannot start: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions apply; these are separate from Super Chat eligibility. YouTube’s restrictions guidance explains live-streaming limits.
