No public evidence establishes that Walmart’s cameras and AI know everything happening in its stores. Walmart says it uses cameras and automated technologies for security and operational purposes, and that they may capture images at checkout, help deter theft, or inform store design. Other disclosed technologies—such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device location, parking-lot license-plate readers, and AI inventory systems—serve different purposes and should not be treated as one all-seeing surveillance system.
What Walmart says its in-store cameras do
Walmart’s U.S. and Puerto Rico Customer Privacy Notice, updated August 20, 2026, says the company operates cameras and automated technologies in stores and on Walmart property outside stores for security and operational purposes. It says the systems may capture images of customers at checkout, help deter theft, or support store-design improvements. Walmart also lists security and fraud prevention, service improvement, analytics, and research and development among its stated uses of personal information.
The notice says Walmart may collect visual and audio information, including photographs and audio or video recordings, while also noting that not every listed category applies to every individual. Walmart’s wording describes possible uses; it does not establish that every store uses the same systems or that cameras continuously identify and follow every shopper. Read Walmart’s Customer Privacy Notice.
“These cameras and automated technologies may capture images of you as part of check out, to help deter theft, or improve store design to better serve our customers.”

Which other technologies are easy to confuse with cameras?
Several capabilities appear in Walmart’s disclosures and reporting, but they collect different kinds of data and have different stated purposes.

| Technology | Data used | Where and stated purpose | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store cameras and automated technologies | Images and, as applicable, audio or video recordings | Stores and Walmart property outside stores; security, operations, checkout, theft deterrence, and store design | Walmart’s privacy notice describes possible operation and uses; it does not establish a universal system that tracks every shopper. |
| Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device location | Signals associated with a mobile device | In stores offering free Wi-Fi or using Bluetooth; possible services include nearby-product discovery, item location, and in-store navigation | Walmart says precise geolocation may depend on device settings and consent. This is device-location functionality, not camera tracking. |
| Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) | License-plate information | Walmart properties where permitted by law; security, theft and fraud prevention, parking enforcement, and safety | A separate Walmart notice describes the system and its stated controls; it is not evidence about in-store camera analytics. |
| AI inventory systems | Inventory and operational data | Retail operations, including inventory management and replenishment | Walmart Global Tech describes AI systems connecting stores, fulfillment and distribution centers, and suppliers. This does not establish shopper surveillance. |
Device location is not the same as being filmed
Walmart’s privacy notice says that, depending on device settings and consent, it may collect precise geolocation. In stores with free Wi-Fi or using Bluetooth, it may recognize a mobile device’s location. The notice describes possible Bluetooth uses such as finding nearby products, locating an item, or navigating the store. Those signals can relate to a device’s location; they should not be described as images or proof that a camera followed its owner. Walmart’s notice explains its location-data disclosures.
License-plate readers apply to property, not the shopping aisle
Walmart’s separate ALPR notice, updated February 16, 2026, says automated license plate readers are used on Walmart properties where permitted by law. The stated purposes include security, theft and fraud prevention, parking enforcement, and safety. Walmart says access is limited to authorized associates, the system is led by the vice president and chief safety officer, and it is routinely monitored for accuracy. Those statements concern plate-reader data on property, not in-store video. See Walmart’s ALPR Privacy Notice.

- True Detect Heat & Motion Sensors: Minimize false notifications and get accurate alerts that matter. Swann’s True Detect technology uses PIR sensors to detect heat signatures and movement from humans and vehicles.
- Smart Search Playback: Easily locate events with Smart Search. Simply select a specific area within the video frame, and the system will scan recordings for motion in that location ideal for tracking suspicious activity or identifying when a missing item was moved.
AI for inventory is an operational use
Walmart Global Tech describes AI-powered inventory management and replenishment: its systems connect 4,700 stores, fulfillment centers, distribution centers, and suppliers, and algorithms adapt to changing demand. That figure describes the network in the company’s article, not the number of stores using AI cameras or the reach of a surveillance system. Walmart Global Tech’s account of AI-powered retail operations.
What the Sam’s Club checkout-camera example shows—and doesn’t
In a January 9, 2024 report about Walmart’s AI initiatives, The Associated Press described a Sam’s Club exit-camera system that photographs cart contents to help confirm purchases. Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas said the system was then available in 10 clubs, with broader rollout planned later that year. That is a dated report about a specific Sam’s Club checkout flow. It does not establish how many clubs use the system now, or that every Walmart store uses the same technology. Read the Associated Press report.

Does the evidence show that Walmart uses face recognition or tracks every shopper?
The cited Walmart disclosures and reporting do not establish that Walmart uses facial recognition to identify shoppers, or that its cameras create a complete record of every person’s movements in every store. Walmart’s notice says cameras and automated technologies may capture images for specified purposes; it does not describe a universal, continuous shopper-tracking system. The lack of that evidence is not proof that no particular store has additional technology, but it does mean the headline claim that Walmart knows everything happening in its stores is unsupported.
Broader retail-industry reporting helps explain why camera capabilities draw attention, but it is not proof of a Walmart deployment. In March 2024, Axios reported on retailers adopting tools including AI-equipped cameras, RFID, audio detection, and license-plate recognition. It quoted Read Hayes, director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, describing newer camera technology as “much more searchable” and having “much greater resolution,” and reported that AI can flag suspicious behavior in real time. These industry observations do not confirm that Walmart uses face matching, loitering analytics, or any specific AI-camera system. Axios also noted privacy concerns and the risk of false accusations. Read Axios’s report on retail loss-prevention technology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to read the “everything” claim
Walmart acknowledges using cameras and automated technologies, and it describes several other data-driven tools. But the public information cited here supports narrower claims: some systems may capture images for checkout, theft deterrence, or store design; device signals may support location-based services; plate readers may operate on property where allowed; and AI can help manage inventory. These are not interchangeable systems, and none of the cited sources supplies a statistic measuring how much Walmart’s cameras see or showing that they know everything happening in stores.
Walmart Global Tech has also reported that approximately 1.4 million U.S. associates had completed training in its responsible-technology focus areas as of its October 10, 2024 article. That is a company-reported training figure, not a measure of camera deployment or surveillance. Read Walmart Global Tech’s responsible-technology article.
