No Gaboon viper was found in Santa Ana. After police and wildlife experts searched for a reported dangerous snake, the person who reported it admitted the accompanying image was AI-generated and the report was false, police said. The incident shows how an unverified image can prompt a real public-safety response—and why visual clues or AI detectors alone are not proof.
What happened in Santa Ana?
On Monday, September 28, 2026, Santa Ana police warned residents about a reported Gaboon viper near Main Street and Edinger Avenue. The initial report described a snake in a residential area; the accompanying image appeared to show it on a tree above a shed. Because the report concerned a potentially dangerous non-native snake, officers searched with reptile experts for hours.
The search found no evidence of a matching snake. Detectives later followed up with the person who reported the sighting, who admitted that the image was AI-generated and the report false, according to police statements quoted by the Los Angeles Times and CBS Los Angeles.
The order matters: the first alert communicated an unverified report that police considered serious enough to investigate. The later update reflected the investigation’s finding. The available reporting does not establish that officers relied only on the image, or that an AI detector authenticated it.

Yes. The Los Angeles Times reported that some parents kept children indoors. A nearby resident also called police after seeing another snake; it turned out not to be a viper. Officers and reptile experts spent time searching, but reporting did not establish a specific financial cost.
Santa Ana police said: “AI-generated images can look very real, and when false information is shared as fact, it can quickly create unnecessary fear, confusion and concern in our community.” NBC Los Angeles reported the statement after police confirmed the image and report were false: NBC Los Angeles.

Why did experts question the image?
A Gaboon viper is native to sub-Saharan Africa, and the Los Angeles Times described the species as large, heavy and ground-dwelling. The paper attributed a weight of more than 45 pounds to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute; the report did not state the year for that figure. In the image, the snake appeared to be on a thin branch, a setting experts considered inconsistent with their expectations. Herpetologist Greg Pauly also said a branch appeared to pass into the snake’s body. These details raised questions, but they did not by themselves prove fabrication.
The distinction is important: an odd-looking detail can be a reason to investigate an image, not a conclusive test. In this case, the person’s admission resolved the question; visual analysis alone did not. The Los Angeles Times coverage discusses the experts’ observations and the limits of interpreting the image: October 1 report.

Can AI detectors tell whether an image is fake?
Not reliably enough to treat a result as a verdict. According to the Los Angeles Times, police reportedly checked publicly accessible AI detectors, but the tools disagreed: one labeled the image AI-generated and another deemed it legitimate. The incident provides no accuracy rate for those tools. A detector result should be treated as one uncertain signal, alongside context, visual inspection and independent verification—not as proof that an image is genuine or fabricated.

- Known: Police did not find the reported snake, and the person who reported it admitted that the image was AI-generated and the report false.
- Known: The alert and search were responses to a report of a potentially dangerous exotic snake; the image was not the only established basis for police action.
- Not established: The available reporting gives no population-level statistic for AI-generated false reports to police and no reliable detector accuracy rate.
- Not established: The reports do not give a final legal outcome for the person who made the report. The Los Angeles Times said it was initially unclear whether charges would follow; later coverage described an investigation, not a final disposition.
Joseph Lestrange, identified by the Los Angeles Times as a former division chief at Homeland Security Investigations, said: “These types of threats are not going away, so we need to find a way to mitigate it.” That is his assessment, not an official agency policy.
