Summit says three of its managed Bridgefield insurance carriers have received regulatory approval to offer workers’ compensation coverage in Maryland and Washington, D.C. Independent insurance agents can submit quote requests for both jurisdictions, according to the company’s September 17, 2026 announcement.
Which carriers are expanding coverage?
The approved carriers are Bridgefield Casualty Insurance Company, Bridgefield Employers Insurance Company, and Bridgefield Indemnity Insurance Company. Summit is a member of Great American Insurance Group. The announcement describes approval to begin offering coverage; it does not state exact approval or policy effective dates, state filing numbers, underwriting criteria, or which business classes may qualify.
How can agents and employers act on the expansion?
Independent agents can submit quote requests for workers’ compensation policies in Maryland and Washington, D.C. Local property-and-casualty agents who are not currently appointed with Summit can inquire about becoming Summit-appointed agents. The announcement does not publish appointment requirements or confirm that every employer or business will be eligible for coverage.
What services and ratings did Summit report?
Summit describes its workers’ compensation approach as including claims management, loss-prevention expertise, and responsive service. Those are company descriptions, not independent findings about performance or claim outcomes. Summit’s announcement also reports that each of the three Bridgefield carriers is rated “A+” (Superior) by AM Best Company; anyone relying on a current rating should verify it with AM Best.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The expansion is a market-availability update for Summit’s commercial insurance service. It is not an announcement of a change to workers’ compensation law, a new retail product, or a direct-to-consumer sales channel. The announcement includes no premium, injury-rate, policyholder, market-size, or performance statistics, and it does not establish that coverage is available to every employer.
Summit president and CEO James Wood said the company’s approach centers on preventing workplace accidents and providing better outcomes for injured employees and employers. That statement expresses Summit’s position; it is not independent evidence of results.
