Finn Azaz, John Egan and Liam Scales returned to the Republic of Ireland starting XI for the Nations League match against Austria on 1 October 2026. Ireland lined up in a 3-4-2-1, with Azaz set to play deeper alongside Conor Coventry. The match has since finished 2–2.
Republic of Ireland’s announced starting lineup
Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson selected the following XI for the Austria match:
- Caoimhín Kelleher
- James Abankwah
- Dara O’Shea
- John Egan
- Liam Scales
- Conor Coventry
- Finn Azaz
- Ryan Manning
- Adam Idah
- Jack Moylan
- Troy Parrott
The selection was announced in a 3-4-2-1 shape. The Irish Examiner’s lineup report identified Azaz, Egan and Scales as returning to the starting team.
Why Azaz was selected deeper
Hallgrímsson said Azaz would play deeper alongside Coventry, rather than in a more advanced role. He explained that Ireland wanted Azaz’s technical ability and “cleverness” in midfield to help contend with Austria’s pressing. The manager described Austria as “one of the best pressing teams in the world” and said, “because Finn is one of best technical players, we need his cleverness in midfield.”

Other changes to the starting XI
Jake O’Brien and Jayson Molumby were left out of the starting lineup. Adam Idah and Jack Moylan kept their places after scoring as substitutes in Ireland’s preceding 3–0 win over Israel, according to the Irish Examiner’s report.
How the Austria match finished
Ireland and Austria drew 2–2 in their 2026/27 UEFA Nations League match on 1 October 2026, as listed by UEFA’s league-phase results. The Irish Examiner reported that Troy Parrott scored twice in the first half before Austria came back to level; it listed an attendance of 45,784. Read the match report.
