But its public materials do not establish a standardized, turnkey “crypto as a service” or white-label package. The distinction matters: companies can integrate with Luno’s existing platform, while the exact product structure, responsibilities and commercial terms need to be confirmed directly.
What Luno offers businesses
Luno’s business-facing offer has two visible paths: API integration for building crypto-related features into a platform, and institutional exchange access that includes an over-the-counter (OTC) desk. These are real integration and trading services; they are not, on the public evidence, proof of a general white-label product.
| Path | Typical use | Access model | What to establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| API integration | Embed market information, account actions, trading or transfers in a business workflow. | Connect software to Luno’s platform using its API. | Which functions, assets and markets the business account can access, and who holds and services customer accounts. |
| Institutional exchange or OTC | Institutional market access and execution, including private OTC trading where available. | Luno describes institutional exchange access and an OTC desk. | Availability in the client’s jurisdiction, execution arrangements, custody, fees and service commitments. |
Luno cites Discovery Bank as an example of digital-asset access supporting a financial-services client. That named reference does not disclose the relationship’s operating model or establish that the same arrangement is available to other businesses. Luno’s institutional page also describes local-currency rails, multi-user permissions, ring-fenced assets and proof-of-reserves reporting as features or controls. These are company descriptions, not independent verification of a particular client’s setup.
What a business can build with the API
Luno says its API can support custom applications, payment integrations, market data and programmatic trading. Its documentation describes account creation, market data, order submission, buying and selling cryptocurrency, transfers and wallet-address generation. In practice, that makes the API a set of building blocks for connecting software to Luno’s platform, rather than evidence on its own of a ready-made branded exchange for a business’s customers.

Luno’s API marketing page reports that the API has facilitated more than $5 billion in traded volume. This is an undated, company-reported figure, not an independently verified measurement. Luno’s API page describes the range of possible features; the API reference provides technical details and a changelog with entries through August 13, 2026.
The documentation lists a limit of 300 API calls per minute and 50 simultaneous streaming sessions, and requires HTTPS. Those are published technical limits, not a guarantee of capacity for a specific integration or a substitute for confirming current limits and endpoint behavior during implementation.

Does “crypto as a service” mean white-label?
Not necessarily. The phrase can describe many different arrangements, from a business calling an exchange API to a provider supplying a fully branded customer experience and taking responsibility for parts of the service. Luno’s public API and institutional materials establish API access and institutional services, but do not define a standardized turnkey or white-label package.
Luno says a business account can integrate the API to build cryptocurrency features into a platform. That supports describing Luno as offering infrastructure a business can integrate. It does not, by itself, answer whether the business can use its own branding, whether Luno or the business contracts with end customers, or who operates onboarding, support, custody and transaction monitoring. The Discovery Bank reference is not enough to infer those terms.

Where institutional OTC access is available
Luno’s institutional page states that its OTC desk is available in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. That is a specific geographic statement about OTC access, not a global availability map for all Luno services. Institutional exchange access, API functionality, local-currency rails and permission to provide customer-facing services may differ by country, entity and product.
Luno also lists operational features including multi-user permissions, local-currency rails, ring-fenced assets and proof-of-reserves reporting. Businesses should ask what each control means in the proposed service, which legal entity provides it, and what reporting or contractual documentation supports it.

Customer-facing crypto services bring extra obligations
Luno’s business-account guidance distinguishes integrating an API from providing a service that handles third-party customer funds. For the latter, Luno says an applicant must show appropriate licensing for the relevant service and country or currency and provide AML, ATF and KYC policies. This is Luno’s onboarding description, not a complete legal analysis; requirements depend on the business activity and jurisdiction, so companies need their own regulatory advice.
A dated South African example illustrates why geographic precision matters: the FSCA’s June 2024 authorised CASP list names Luno (Pty) Ltd, FSP 53314, with advice, intermediary-services and investment-management activities. That record is specific to South Africa and June 2024; it is not a current global inventory of Luno’s permissions. View the FSCA’s June 2024 list.

Secure API access as a production control
An API credential can expose more than market data. Luno’s key-creation guidance explains that permissions can be scoped, IP restrictions applied and expiry dates set. It labels trading access very high risk because it can allow trading, sending crypto and withdrawing money. Luno warns: “In other words, providing this type of API key to a third party enables them to do anything they want with your funds.” Luno’s API-key guidance should be treated as an operational security requirement, not just setup documentation.
- Grant only the permissions required for the integration; avoid trading or transfer permissions for components that only need market data.
- Use IP restrictions where the deployment architecture permits, and set an expiry date with an owner responsible for rotation.
- Keep keys out of client-side code, logs and shared documents; store them in an appropriately controlled secrets-management system.
- Separate development and production credentials, restrict who can create or change keys, and define a revocation procedure for suspected exposure.
Questions to settle before selecting Luno
Public product descriptions do not settle the commercial or operating model. Before committing to an integration or institutional relationship, a buyer should get written answers to the following:
- Product shape: Is the arrangement API-only, a branded or white-label interface, an institutional exchange relationship, OTC execution, or a combination?
- Markets and assets: Which legal entity serves the business, which jurisdictions and currencies are supported, and which crypto assets and endpoints are available to that client?
- Customer and custody responsibilities: Who contracts with end users, performs onboarding and customer support, safeguards assets, processes withdrawals and handles complaints?
- Regulatory evidence: What licensing or other authorization is required for the proposed activity in each market, and what documents must the business provide?
- Commercial terms: What are the fees, any volume tiers or revenue-sharing terms, and any minimums? The public materials cited here do not specify a complete commercial schedule.
- Operations and resilience: What service levels, incident escalation, maintenance notices, reporting, reconciliation and business-continuity commitments apply?
- Controls and assurance: What do ring-fencing and proof-of-reserves mean in the contract and reporting, and what evidence, cadence and scope apply?
