Yes—iPhone 16 is still a capable, compact iPhone, and it makes sense if you can buy it for noticeably less than iPhone 17 and do not mind a 60Hz screen or 128GB of base storage. Apple Intelligence, a strong main camera, USB-C, and MagSafe/Qi2 charging help it feel current. The newer iPhone 17 is the better fit if you want a smoother, brighter display, more camera flexibility, or twice the starting storage.
What still feels modern about iPhone 16?
iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch OLED display with 2556-by-1179 resolution at 460 pixels per inch, and weighs 170 grams. Apple rates it IP68 for water and dust resistance. Its A18 platform combines a six-core CPU, five-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. These specifications remain ample for everyday apps, photography, and supported Apple Intelligence features. Apple’s iPhone 16 technical specifications also list Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, 5G, Camera Control, USB-C, and emergency satellite features.
Apple Intelligence and Siri
Apple lists Apple Intelligence support for iPhone 16, so it has not lost access to the feature simply because a newer iPhone is available. Apple describes the platform as integrated into apps and designed with privacy in mind. Feature availability can depend on language, region, and software version; Apple’s specifications page is the source for the current supported-feature details.
Camera and charging
The rear system pairs a 48MP Fusion main camera with a 12MP ultra-wide camera. Apple lists 2x optical zoom, macro photography, and 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 60 frames per second. USB-C and MagSafe/Qi2 charging up to 25W give the phone current charging options. Apple says a charge to 50% can take 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter over USB-C, or a 30W-or-higher adapter with MagSafe; adapters are sold separately.

What has aged most: the 60Hz display
The most noticeable compromise is the screen’s 60Hz refresh rate. Scrolling and animations do not look as fluid as they do on iPhone 17’s 120Hz display. TechRadar’s comparison also describes iPhone 17’s panel as larger and brighter. If you are sensitive to motion smoothness or often use your phone outdoors, this is a more meaningful difference than the A18-versus-A19 generation gap alone. iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17
The choice is less about whether iPhone 16 works well and more about whether its lower price compensates for the newer model’s upgrades. The figures below follow TechRadar’s comparison; its listed post-launch prices are market-specific and may change.

TechRadar reported these prices after iPhone 17 launched: they are not a guarantee of today’s retailer pricing, and availability varies by country. The same comparison says iPhone 17 shipped on September 19, 2025, while iPhone 16 launched in 2024 and remained available. iPhone 16’s advantages are its lower listed price and slightly smaller, lighter body.
How is iPhone 16 battery life after a year?
Apple’s estimates are up to 22 hours of video playback, up to 18 hours of streamed video, and up to 80 hours of audio playback. These are Apple’s stated maximums, not a promise of a particular owner’s daily runtime. In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, iPhone 16 recorded 12 hours and 13 minutes; that is a test result under that publication’s test conditions, not an Apple rating. Real-world endurance varies with usage, signal, settings, and battery condition. Tom’s Guide’s iPhone buying guide also identifies the 60Hz screen and 128GB base storage as drawbacks.

Should you buy iPhone 16, or upgrade to iPhone 17?
Buy iPhone 16 if
- You find it at a meaningful discount versus iPhone 17.
- You prefer a smaller, lighter phone and are comfortable with a 6.1-inch 60Hz display.
- 128GB is enough for your apps, photos, and downloads.
- The main-camera system and Apple Intelligence support meet your needs.
Choose iPhone 17 if
- You value a 120Hz display and the larger, brighter screen.
- You want 256GB as the starting storage tier rather than 128GB.
- You take frequent ultra-wide or selfie photos and want the newer camera specifications.
If you already own iPhone 16, the cited comparison points to display, camera, storage, and processor improvements in iPhone 17, but does not establish that every owner should upgrade. Keep iPhone 16 if those differences do not solve a problem you actually have; consider moving to iPhone 17 if smoother scrolling, more storage, or its camera changes matter in your daily use.

For a case, choose one made specifically for iPhone 16 that leaves the Camera Control button accessible or includes a compatible control design; a generic case that covers or obstructs that control can interfere with its use. For charging, Apple documents USB-C, MagSafe, and Qi2 support, including charging up to 25W under the applicable MagSafe/Qi2 specifications. Use a 20W-or-higher USB-C adapter for Apple’s stated 30-minute-to-50% USB-C charging claim. That adapter threshold is distinct from the 30W-or-higher adapter Apple specifies for the same claim over MagSafe.
