USB On-The-Go (OTG) lets a portable or embedded product connect directly to selected USB peripherals without a PC. Its advantage is a port that can act as host or peripheral; its main power-design challenge is supplying and protecting 5 V VBUS from a battery-powered device.
What USB OTG does
Traditional USB assigns fixed host and peripheral roles. OTG extends that model with a dual-role device that can serve as either one and, when needed, exchange roles. That lets products such as phones, tablets, cameras, printers, instruments, and embedded systems communicate directly with compatible accessories.
USB-IF describes OTG’s benefits as “targeted host capability to communicate with selected other USB peripherals,” direct connections between OTG devices, and power-saving features intended to preserve battery life. Analog Devices likewise describes OTG as enabling two USB devices to communicate without a personal computer.
For a user, the practical example is connecting a compatible accessory with an OTG host adapter or ACA cable, where the product and accessory support that connection. For a product designer, the appeal is that one device can support both host and peripheral use cases rather than requiring separate fixed-role hardware. OTG power-saving behavior also allows the link to remain unpowered until a session is requested.

How OTG handles host and peripheral roles
OTG retains the host/peripheral model but adds mechanisms for session startup and role exchange. The initial A-device is the host and is responsible for sourcing VBUS; the B-device begins as the peripheral. The A-device/B-device distinction therefore affects both who controls the initial connection and which side supplies bus power.
Session Request Protocol
The Session Request Protocol (SRP) lets a device request that a USB session begin. This is relevant to battery-powered designs because a port need not keep VBUS active when no session is underway.

Host Negotiation Protocol
The Host Negotiation Protocol (HNP) permits the devices to exchange host and peripheral roles when the connection requires it. Implementing OTG therefore involves more than wiring a fixed-role USB port: the dual-role controller and firmware must coordinate protocol state and power direction.
What power circuit an OTG product needs
In a typical battery-powered OTG design described by EE Times, a single-cell lithium-ion battery supplies 3.0–4.2 V, while the USB host must provide a regulated 5 V VBUS. The exact circuit depends on the product’s battery, USB implementation, and expected peripherals, but the design must manage startup, monitor VBUS, support low-power states, and shut VBUS off if an attached peripheral demands more current than the A-device can supply.

EE Times, reporting requirements from USB OTG Supplement Rev. 1.0 circa 2003, gives two historical design figures: at least 8 mA between 4.4 V and 5.25 V, and a voltage rise time of less than 100 ms. These figures are tied to that reported supplement and period; they should not be treated as confirmation of current requirements for a new product without checking the applicable specification and compliance route.
Power-path functions to plan for
- 5 V generation: A boost converter or other regulated 5 V source is needed when the battery cannot directly provide the required VBUS voltage.
- Controlled VBUS switching: A current-limited high-side switch can connect and disconnect the source while helping protect the product during overloads.
- Voltage and current monitoring: Sensing helps firmware and the controller determine whether VBUS is present and respond when a peripheral exceeds the available supply.
- Startup and fault handling: The circuit must control VBUS turn-on and handle shutdown, discharge, and fault conditions as required by the product design.
- Firmware coordination: Firmware must align the power path with session state, the USB controller, and the active role so that the device sources or sinks VBUS appropriately.
These are design functions, not a single prescribed schematic or component list. A VBUS power switch, a 5 V boost-converter evaluation board, or an OTG compliance tester are relevant engineering categories; part selection depends on the product’s current, voltage, data-speed, and compliance needs.

How legacy OTG compares with USB-C and Power Delivery
USB Power Delivery is a newer USB-IF framework for flexible power over USB-C. USB-IF announced in 2021 that PD Revision 3.1 raised the capability of a full-featured USB-C cable to up to 240 W. That is a framework comparison point, not a migration recipe for a legacy Micro-AB OTG product: connector choice, power behavior, controller, and accessory support must be reconsidered for the target product.

The available facts do not establish a universal winner. A new USB-C design may suit a product seeking the newer power framework, while a legacy OTG design may remain appropriate when its connector and accessory ecosystem are required. Those choices should be made against the product’s use cases and support horizon, not the maximum power figure alone.

What OTG compliance status means for a product
USB-IF says products conforming to the OTG and Embedded Host supplement use a compliance checklist and an automated Protocol and Electrical Tester (PET). Its current compliance update also says USB-IF will no longer certify USB OTG products and identifies Version 2.0 as the current OTG specification release. Certification, conformance testing, and permission to use a logo are distinct matters; verify the applicable route and logo permissions with USB-IF for the product and market before making a compliance claim.
