Dell’s January 2025 branding reset grouped its PCs under Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max, a lineup that invited comparisons with Apple’s product tiers. The names have since changed: in 2026, Dell restored XPS for premium consumer laptops and introduced Dell Pro Precision for performance workstations, while Dell Pro continues as its commercial productivity family.
Why Dell’s 2025 naming looked like Apple’s
Dell announced a unified branding structure in January 2025 for PCs, displays, services and accessories. The three PC tiers—Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max—used familiar labels that resembled Apple’s base, Pro and Pro Max naming, prompting the comparison in contemporaneous coverage from MacRumors.
Dell executive Kevin Terwilliger pushed back on the idea that the company had borrowed the word “Pro” from Apple. In launch coverage, he said Pro had been an industry term before Apple used it, citing Microsoft Windows, AMD Ryzen and Intel vPro. The resemblance was in the tier structure and wording; it does not by itself establish that Dell copied Apple.
What the three tiers meant in Dell’s 2025 lineup
| 2025 label | Intended role | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Dell | Everyday use, school and work | The general-purpose tier, according to Dell’s 2025 portfolio announcement. |
| Dell Pro | Professional-grade productivity | The productivity-focused tier in Dell’s 2025 portfolio announcement. |
| Dell Pro Max | Maximum performance | The performance tier in Dell’s 2025 portfolio announcement; in 2026, Dell said it would retire the Dell Pro Max name as new products were introduced. |
The labels described broad portfolio positions, not a complete specification sheet. A tier name alone does not tell you a computer’s processor, graphics capability, screen, memory, manageability features or suitability for a particular application.

How Dell’s naming changed in 2026
Dell’s 2026 commercial lineup uses Dell Pro for commercial notebooks and related products, with notebook families named Dell Pro 3, Dell Pro 5 and Dell Pro 7. For demanding graphics, engineering and AI work, Dell now places workstations under Dell Pro Precision. XPS returned as Dell’s premium consumer laptop brand.
| 2026 name | Role described by Dell | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Dell Pro 3, Pro 5 and Pro 7 | Commercial notebook families, as listed in Dell’s 2026 announcement | Compare the full model and year, then check its actual specifications and configuration. |
| Dell Pro Precision | Workstations for performance-focused workloads | The Dell workstation path to investigate for demanding graphics, engineering or AI work. |
| XPS | Dell’s premium consumer laptop brand | The premium consumer option in Dell’s 2026 branding, rather than a Dell Pro tier. |
| Dell Pro Max | Name being retired as Dell introduced new products in 2026 | Treat it as a name associated with the earlier reset, and verify the year and current availability of any specific product. |
This is a change in portfolio naming, not evidence of a one-for-one renaming of every older product. Dell’s announcements place Precision workstations within Dell Pro Precision and identify XPS as the premium consumer line; they do not establish a universal model-by-model replacement map for Latitude or other legacy families. Dell’s commercial portfolio also includes desktops, monitors and client peripherals.

How to choose among the current families
- For a premium consumer laptop: Start with XPS, then compare the specific model’s configuration, portability and price for your region.
- For business productivity: Compare Dell Pro 3, Pro 5 and Pro 7 notebooks against your organization’s performance, manageability and portability needs.
- For graphics, engineering or AI workloads: Look at Dell Pro Precision workstations and confirm that the particular configuration meets the software or workload requirements.
- When comparing older listings: Record the model year and full product name. A Dell Pro Max listing may refer to the earlier naming scheme, while regional availability and product names can vary over time.
What Dell’s published performance figures do—and don’t—say
Dell said the 2026 Dell Pro 7 is up to 18% thinner than the previous generation. The company also attributed 20% improved airflow to new thermal technology in its 2025 commercial laptop announcement. These are manufacturer-published comparisons, not results from an independent laboratory test; they should not be read as guarantees for every model or configuration.
